Solve : Same hard disk model, different capacity ?? ??

Answer»

Hello, friends.

I have 2 identical harddisk installed in a hp desktop Pentium 4 PC. the OS is WinXP Pro SP2. The harddisks model is : Maxtor DiamondMax10, 6B080MO. The spec of this model is 80GB.
After installed and formatted with NTFS, the capacity for 1st hdisk as drive C is 74.5 GB. The 2nd hdisk, also formatted with NTFS as drive E only have capacity 68.4GB.

Why and how to make them the same ..

Thanks for all information.
Do a search at this forum and there are a LOT of issues on this topic. Hope you will find appropriate information.

But SURE someone will answer you soon, also. But do a search yourself first.

Good Luck. The "80GB" is just a rounded number. If they were to give the exact capacity they'd have to make thousands of packaging for each seperate HDD. "NEW IBM 74.5GB HDD!" "New IBM 74.67GB HDD!" etc.

The marketing a 68GB HDD as an 80GB HDD TROUBLES me, though...Do you have anything on that disk? That should be sold as a 70GB HDD.

In any case, the "80" is just a rounded number. I recently got a 128MB stick of RAM that is actually 132MB and I have a 256MB CF card for my digital camera that only holds 245MB. Sometimes you GET lucky, sometimes you don't. =/

My HDD is a 20GB that only holds 19GB. Rounded numbers. Thanks to Mac for your understanding on my question. Also appreciate to others for information sharing.

I formatted the 1st hdisk by HP restore utility CD during OS installation. then format the 2nd from Window disk management.

If this is the problem, how do i solve it ..

Thanks.
