Too many competing ideas and instructions can overwhelm an OP and cause mistakes and problems.well i tried to manually install the ntbackup but it says the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation. i also did the ckdsk which TOOK forever but it just went right back to the windows restart. I'd wait until carbon GETS through. Did you try System Restore?

You don't have to use the backup utility, just copy and paste to an external memory storage.
