Solve : Scandisk/Defrag not working...Help!!? |
|
Answer» Quote I am now starting day two of sitting at this love-hate machine trying and praying that I'll figure it out. OK download CCLeaner and run it over your system to remove junk files such as index.dat which can impede ScanDisk. Disconnect from the internet and uninstall Spyware Doctor AND your anti-virus program. Re-boot into safe mode and see if ScanDisk will run. If not run the Drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette over the drive to check for errors. You can also run scandisk from a bootdiskette... A:\>scandisk /all /surface , which takes about 1 hour per 10 GB of drive space. Which operating system are you using? '98. So how old is the computer, drive, etc. ? Quote I did a reinstall, but when I try to access it, my pc completely freezes and I have to reboot. Also, since the last time I was in safe mode to try earlier suggestion, my screen is all messed up, the fonts are wrong, the colors are goofy and I can't restore them. Looks like I'm still in safe mode....but not. Not certain about a repair in the add/remove program. I'll take a look. Try running MemTest86 and making sure that yor RAM modules are properly seated as it sounds as if you may be suffering from general data corruption. It might be better to pay for a new hard drive 7,200 rev/min with 8 MB drive buffer and some more RAM to bring it up to 512 MB than to waste money on MS. And some new, 80 wire, screened IDE cables... Thanks for all the advice....a lot of it over my head though. My concern about wiping out Spyware Doc is that it has quarantined files that I obviously need....if I GET rid of it or clean up around it and then get rid of it, won't I lose those important files? I would think this could be basic....my problem is getting SpyDoc to come up. I reinstalled, but my pc freezes when I try to access that one. Still trying to get a Tech from SpyDoc to call....Ha! Lowsy help from them... |
