Solve : Screen constantly blinks(refreshes) on its own!!?

Answer»

Windows XP

NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000

256 RAM 3.0 GHZ Pentinum 4

Monitor: Gateway EV700

The monitor constantly REFRESHES or BLACKOUTS on its own and it's driving me crazy.  The computer freezes for a second and the SCREEN goes black for a second at the same time.  It does this anytime a new program is OPENED or anytime it feels like it.  It is actually doing it as I am typing this.  I have used various anti-virus scans like avg, panda titanium, and ewido anti-malware, but it hasn't worked.

Is this a hardware problem? related to power management?

Or is this a software problem?

Or do I have a virus?  All of the anti-virus programs say that I don't have a virus.

And last but not least How do I fix it??

Thanks in advance.
Yawetag:

Have you recently added new hardware, such as a new video card?

DocNo, I have not added any new hardware recently.  The monitor worked fine with my current video card, but it started blinking about 3 months ago and my first monitor burned out or just broke because of the blinking and I switched to my current monitor and still blinks.  Help!

Thanks.I would get rid of that possessed video card!   Quote

Another possibility:

Power surge.  This may be caused by the electricity coming from the electrical outlet, a hardware device in the computer, or the power supply.  Have an electrical check the voltage of the outlet.  If the voltage is OK, have a computer repair TECHNICIAN check the voltages of the power supply and other hardware of the system.

CAUTION: Always unplug a computer before working inside the case!
Alternatively, leave it plugged in so that you can ground yourself on the case and avoid static-spiking your processors...
i have almost the same problem but it only starts to freak out when i update the drivers. i have gone to nvidias web site and tried most of the current and archived drivers there but nothing seems to work. the mb is an ecs. the card is an ms 4000 128mb 8x agp. the card works fine without drivers lol but it freaks when you try to use the most current. any ideas? The newest nVidia drivers have caused problems with some cards. Use a previous version if they worked better. Latest is not always the greatest (just the latest)

(That card is kind of a dog anyway!)
