Hi, I have dell OPTIPLEX desktop (pretty old but it does the job) however, I have downloaded WINDOWS sp 2 but at the end of the installation process  an error box appears saying " you can only install this update on build 2600"  I m running on xp pro. Any help very much appreciated.1. If you open a command prompt window and type VER and press Enter, what do you see?
2. Why aren't you installing SP3?
3. Is your installation of XP genuine and activated?

i have a dell PC with the window xp product key on the side, however when i had problems i reinstalled xp with a copy that was not genuine,

Will using a dell windows xp reinstall disc ( i can buy online) solve my problems, or have i written over the genuine copy of windows forever.

any comments most appreciated.


I've merged these topics since I assume they are the same issue. Depending on how you tried to install the illegal copy, you MAY very well have to start from scratch.hi, is there a way to see if the first copy is STILL on the hard drive, ie  more than one version or somthing..........Add/Remove Programs should list all SP's and hotfixes installed...
