Answer» I recently experienced a hard drive failure and reinstalled windows on my new hard drive with the SP2 as well. I'm running XP Home Edition. Some of the shortcut icons on the task bar are digital jibberish but are still functional as are several on the startup meu. If I CLICK on the Office icons, the program starts and the icon picture is reestablished, but with other icons it isn't. My configuration is:

Does anyone have any suggestions? I tried doing a repair installation of windows but was unsuccesful. When asked for an Admin password I can't provide one as none has been made. I tried just hitting enter but that gave me a C PROMPT and a dead end.
I also have recently installed a Western Digital 500 GB backup hardrive with the associated software to do scheduled backups.
Thanks.
PorterLPorterL ......... Are the damaged ( odd looking icons) icons that are part of the Win XP operating system or icons for other software you have installed ..... Could you post a screen shot of your destop so we can see the effected icons ?
dl65 Enclosed is a Word file of the screen shot. Also, I RAN a search for .cpl files and after just running the search, the icons reappeared in normal form.
PorterWell, the file enclosure didn' work for me. How do I send a screen shot to you? I've tried sending it as a JPEG from Paint SHOP Pro.
