Solve : Slow Internet while sharing?

Answer»

Hello,

Their are three computers in my household, a mac book, and a custom built desktop, and a DELL desktop, and in the past we could run all three simultaneously with no problem what so ever. For the past few weeks, whenever someone turns on one of the other computers, the custom built desktop becomes extremely slow. I experience CONSTANT freezes, to the point where my browser wont load for a few minutes. The weird thing is, the other computer experiences no slowness. We haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary that would cause this, and once the other computer is shut off, it goes back to normal. The same thing happens with both the dell desktop and the mac book. The mac book is wireless, and the dell and custom built desktops share a router and modem. I've updated my drivers, scanned my computer, and nothing has seemed to help this problem.

Anything will be helpful, thank you.Just a wild guess. Maybe one of lithe computers has some kind of Malware using up bandwidth.

But.. before checking into that, here are some suggestions from Microsoft.

If you suspect a virus, you might try a free on-line scan.
This one is reported led to be good:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.htmlAre the computers on a SHARED network or just internet sharing through the router ?They all share the same network, the dell shares the router and the laptop is usually running wireless.Quote from: Bahizzle on August 05, 2011, 04:56:25 PM

They all share the same network, the dell shares the router and the laptop is usually running wireless.
The laptop is using wireless through the same router? The custom built computer, and the dell are hooked up to the router, and the laptop runs wireless, but they all go to the same modem. That doesn't answer the question. Here's 2 more.
1. Does the modem have a built-in wireless router?
2. Do you have a separate router with built-in wireless attached to the modem? If it's shared you are gonna see slower speeds...
Test the laptop by itself to see...1. Does the modem have a built-in wireless router?
No, we have a Netgear wifi router, and a westell modem.
2. Do you have a separate router with built-in wireless attached to the modem?
Yes, the netgear wifi router HOOKS up to the modem.

@Patio, I never used to experience slower internet speed until the last few weeks. My question was are you just sharing internet ? if you are a virus will not affect all pc's only the one infected if you are on a network like a shared drive than the virus can migrate to other pc's on the network .so a virus will not slow down your speed if only internet sharing is enabled .. Can we assume you have reboot the modem and the router?
If yes, reset the router with it's reset button. This will clear it's saved memory.Quote

It seems that the desktop is you are having connection problem with... What is your subscribed connection speed? More information is needed on the desktop's specs and OS. Have you tried updating/reinstalling the LAN card for that PC and cleaning of junk files?
