Solve : Slow running computer? |
|
Answer» Fault symptoms are black screen @ startup "malfunction during LAST switch off". Computer runs slower after each startup. Info window says ATI PANEL failed to initialize fault "thread stuck in device driver Q293078" .Tried to download driver but this caused a message no driver present. Also tried to install driver from original tools disk supplied during purchase. no better result. Then reinstalled Windows Xp from disk supplied. Worked ok until after switch off. It gets slower after each switch off. how I have a screen display if video driver not presentWindows loads its default driver, not ATI driver, if ATI driver is faulty. Your main problem is "Ram 256Mb". Also, some of those A series Toshiba laptops are known for bad motherboards. Thanks "Broni" for your comment's I have learned something. I did'nt know about default drivers. I agree 256MB Ram is small by current standards but this machine has not been modified & is in purchase condition. It has been a problem since new & little used. It belongs to a friend who I am trying to help. Pensioner. Is it still under warranty?I sit still at WEDDINGS and Funerals...You have to see everything, don't you? No its well out of warranty.Yeah, it looks like you may have some hardware problem. Try to run HD diagnostic: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#seagate Since Toshiba don't provide any HD diagnostic tool, try Seagate tool.Tried Broni's Seagate suggestion but no luck on that. Tried reloading windows again & computer runs correctly in all respects until it is switched off. Then it restarts with a brief black background screen & message "recovering from a serious error". It runs slowly after that. I noticed that the black screen had info about alternative startups so I tried "safe mode with networking". It runs at normal speed in this mode. Can anyone tell me what I should try next? What exactly happened with Seagate tool? When I set it doing the various SCAN options the blue box filled gradually but when it stopped nothing happened. No report, nothing. Blank screen below the disc info. Probably my fault because of my inexperience using it. Sounds like you didn't give it enough time... It should generate a report whether there are issues or not. Run it before bedtime...Yes you are correct. It runs so slowly that even the SMART scan took for ever. Anyway I did a full set of scans (5) while working in safe mode today, all were given a "pass". I looked very carefully at the Microsoft tools info but again all looked OK. Also looked at the Advanced Windows Options Menu using f8 key & enabled boot logging at start-up. A file is supposed to be created called ntbtlog.txt which is found in directory %windir% but I couldn't find it. I think, you have two options. Get more RAM, or clean reinstall. With 256MB of RAM, XP will be slow, and slower over time. |
