Solve : Sluggish Performance Creeping Now Crawling...?

Answer»

Hi,

Newbie here.  This question is probably old but I didn't find in the search so bear with me if you've heard it before.  I've got a PC and laptop configured with a D-Link router and both are starting to show serious performance degradation.  Both computers are less than a year old and run at over 2GHz.

Bootup time is increasing and now takes several minutes.  Windows take 30 seconds to open on occasion.  The LAG is ESPECIALLY noticeable on my desktop PC.

Is there a step-by-step guide to improving performance?  I know a LOT of background programs can slow things down but I'm not sure which can be turned off in startup.  A software program that automatically takes care of this would be great.  Is there any shareware/freeware that you can recommend?  Any other ideas?

The display computers in the stores run fast fast fast and I get frustrated coming home and having to go have a cigarette (or two) while I'm booting up.

Thanks!

If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.Santa Claus, I won't disagree that there are better defrag programs than the standard Windows Defragmenter, but I do disagree that using the standard Windows Defragmenter would be the cause of the sluggish performance he's experiencing.  I use the standard Windows Defragmenter and I definitely don't have such sluggish performance.  He's got other issues, most likely spyware infestation, which Backdated addressed.Diskeeper 10 Professional is just the full version of the default XP offering, and I don't know of any other program which will adjust the Master File Tables, if that needs doing, and very often it does need doing. If the master file tables are too small then - f  r  a g  m  e  n  t  a  t  i  o  n - increases.

You see how much longer it takes to read - f  r  a  g  m  e  n  t  a  t  i  o  n  - ?

That is how much longer it takes the processor.

It costs all of 12 packs of cigarettes.

New users should get the full picture.

I.E. From 10 seconds to open an application down to 1 second.

Then he should clean up the registry with TuneUP Utilities and run the registry optimiser.

MS should have included DK 10 Pro in both XP Home and XP Professional, then there wouldn't be so many file corruption problems, as any industry professional will tell you.

My 1GHz computer takes 45 seconds to reach the desktop from the POST beep and takes 10 seconds to shut down using the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.Your problem is bootup performance, Microsoft Bootvis do just that, download the program and open it.  click File, new, next boot and driver trace, then click OK, Bootvis goes to work and your computer will reboot when trace FINISHES, once logged on Bootvis will display graphs of you Bootup sequence.  Now you select Trace, Optimise system.  Bootvis goes to work again and reboots your computer and once logged in, Bootvis takes a few minutes to finish and hey you have your system optimised for bootup.

CigarmanIf I were a betting man, I'd put a lot of money on Defrag, Diskeeper and BootVis having no effect whatsoever in this case.

I'm surprised to see the Diskeeper etc posts still here after all this time. The phantom deleter must be off sick! I wouldn't click on anything that you linked to MAC! Quote

NOT EVEN THIS?

I don't go in for gay porn but hey Mac, if it floats your boat, you go ahead mate.

None of that sort of thing here... Quote

I'm feeling better.
Me too! Thanks for the advice.  I didn't have a spyware/adware problem.  But the Absolute Startup software came in handy.  It was easy to use and cut my startup time in half.
Bootvis was awfully complicated for me. I didn't even try to run it.  I also defragmented and ran disc cleanup.  All in all a fairly good improvement for little work and no expensive software purchases.

"Absolute Startup software ..."  Apparently, you found that one on your own, since no one mentioned it in their replies.  You said "no expensive software purchases" but you did not mean no software purchases or were you just using Absolute Startup on the trial basis?

Another tool I suggest you add to your computer system toolkit is CCleaner.  They recently added a link to the home page for "Click here for a Quick Tour...".  It's a good primer for new users.  CCleaner's standard download includes the Yahoo toolbar but you can elect not to install that during the CCleaner installation.  Or, download the Basic version, which is the same as the Standard, without the toolbar. How much longer do we have to put up with Macs psychotic behaviour?

Isn't it about time his ISP was contacted? Quote
I suppose you 'cyber warriors' are trying to play satan aka 'santa' claws at his spider brain suck game as santa/satan tries to claw it all back to keep himself going?

Which computer network do you think will win?

Or is it COCKROACH vs cockroach to the death?

Seen any creepy crawlies lately, or any fly-by-night bats from '*censored*'?

Any of you soupermen care for duck soup? (Marx brothers.)

Give me your prognosis.

Why a duck?
Off topic spam reported.  AGAIN.

Mac, are you utterly incapable of simply being useful?  Can you not just post your helpful stuff, and put all your other diatribe on, say, a blog, where it belongs?
