Solve : So Many Vista Problems!?

Answer»

I'm getting no error message if I attempt to boot the computer ordinarily, just a blank screen. The only NORMAL thing is the mouse is still active.

The computer is an eMachines 3260 with 2Gb RAM, and a Celeron processor.

I was in the middle of installing a driver update for my X-Fi Gamer sound card and I think Windows decided to update at the same time. I've tried rolling the system back to before the updates, but it's not happy with that even.

I can't even install things like a virus checker that it claims I've uninstalled.

I now have a computer with no sound, it says that the service has been turned off, I go into the services to TURN that on, and it says that I can't because I'm in Safe Mode.

Also I am unable to uninstall the NVIDIA driver that I tried to install earlier, I can't click it in the Remove Programs box. I tried installing over the top so I could uninstall, but that doesn't work. *shrug*

It's been like this for a week now, I'm at a loss!

Thanks for any help!I guess, Recovery CD is your best shot.
How old is your computer, anyway? It's about 3 years old. I was stupid enough to use an upgrade disk to change to Vista, so I had problems with that and spent a lot of money calling Microsoft and they used up all my validation attempts.Quote from: elkster on January 10, 2008, 01:14:48 AM

This statement doesn't make sense...they will either validate your install or not.
What version of Windows are we working with here and where did it originate from ? ?It makes sense. I couldn't get the thing to install, so I ended up on the end of a phone line to Microsoft. Neither of us could understand each other, me being English and he being Indian. He kept telling me to validate my install, which I did, which ended up using up my validation attempts. I can't remember the EXACT details, but that's what happened.

Anyway, We are working with Vista Premium which I bought from a shop. I have just done a recovery disk install of XP followed by the upgrade of Vista plus any drivers that I've needed to update. That's all so far, but it's still not happy.Quote from: elkster on January 10, 2008, 01:14:48 AM

So, you were using Windows XP prior to this venture, right? What possessed you to upgrade that computer to Vista? Quote from: soybean on January 10, 2008, 09:49:09 AM

I already said it was a stupid thing to do. I only came here for help, not insults. We're not insulting you...just trying to get to the root of the problems here.
After you re-installed XP to do the Vista update did you re-install all your drivers including the MBoard drivers ? ?
When Vista installs are there any error messages ?
Did you check the MS site to see if this machine can run Vista ?

The biggest issue with Vista so far is drivers. The automatic search for drivers in Vista is not what it should be.
If the system is bootable i suggest DLoading and installing Everest Home.
This will tell you exactly what hardware is in that machine and you can hunt down the Vista drivers for all the components.
We can assist if you like but lose the attitude...I'm sorry, I honestly wasn't trying for attitude

The machine is able to run Vista, I did check up before I bought the upgrade. Anyway, for now the problems are solved. I did as Broni suggested and WENT for the recovery CD. Everything is fine so far. Only time will tell. Give me a couple of weeks and if all else fails, I'll be back to XP.No Problem and Welcome Aboard !

Vista takes some getting used to...
