I don't really know how to fix your problem Kerry, but if lodoftheplat is right, then you can put 'explorer.exe' (located in C:\Wondows) in the Scheduled Tasks (located in Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools) and have it run every boot....dunno if it will work thoughTry to go to Start>Run>Then Type "MSCONFIG" then click the startup tab and tell us what is not checked.  I know you guys are attempting to help but the above just sounds like poor guesswork...
Kerry try the following: Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
LET it run til it finishes, do not interrupt it. After it's done re-boot and let us know what happens.
How many user accounts are on this machine ? ?
After this we can direct you to some online malware scans to see if you are infected. If not you might be looking at a repair install of Windows...

Let us know. Quote

Who are you to tell us that our ideas are poor guess work pffft.  This is a LEARNING forum where if at first you dont succeed you try something else and everyone involved learns something new in the process.  Patio you might be a more experienced technician than most here but making the new comers feel un welcome surely isn't the way to proceed. Also...you mentioned that you would recommend a malware scan to...The funny thing is that is why I told kerry to check to see what was in the startup...Suspicious programs that a Mal ware scan would turn up.  Read post #2 #3 and #4 and tell me he is going to be any closer to a solution...

My statement was an observation nothing more.

And YES this is a learning Forum, i agree. But not to learn troubleshooting at a user's expense.

I stand by what i stated.I'll stand by patio's observations too.
I know you're trying to help, but it does sound like you're guessing.
It's a good place to learn, but not at anyone's cost.

dunno if it will work though
Doesn't sound very confident to me, and if it was my problem I wouldn't be very reassured.
No OFFENCE intended, and I'm sure patio didn't intend any offence either.
Just try to keep it to yourself if you're not sure, or read up a bit before posting, OK?
No hard feelings, eh?Not pressing the "post" button is better than just guessing, and that's a fact. There is a systematic means of problem solving and the suggestions given do not qualify.

The original poster needs to provide a lot more information and we can go from there in a systematic manner.

There is a difference between learning on a forum and a "learning forum" as you envision it. This is the former. If you want the other type there are plenty of those elsewhere you can frequent.
