Solve : Start up Problem. Help plz?

Answer»

Hi. First of all, i'm new to this forum. I've been looking all over this site to find a solution to my computer problem but didn't find anything

My issue:
My cousin let me have a computer because he messed it up somehow. When i turn it on, it goes to the screen that says that the computer had been shut down improperly. And it gives you the option of choosing how you want it to start up (Safe mode, Last known good configuration, etc.). When i choose to start up normally, the screen turns black and nothing else happens. When i choose safe mode, a list pops out that say system32/......bla bla. and then all of a sudden it just stops and freezes there.
Any ideas on how i could fix this? Do i need to reboot the computer? if so, can you please give me steps or a link on how to do this?

Thanks. I would really APPRECIATE it if someone could spend some of their time to help me out.

Edit- I have no info. on what the computer is made up of. It has a Windows 98 and pentium iii sticker on it so i'm guessing that's what it runs.Hello

If you dont plan on needing any of the existing files, the easiest solution would be to ask your cousin for the System Restore CD (unless you have it already)

Go ahead and do a total reformat, this will destroy all currently existing data, nothing will be saved (This means that all music, PHOTOS, documents, etc. will be deleted)

If you do need to keep the files, then we can skip the reformat:
What antivirus is installed?

What happens when you select "Last Good Configuration"?

When you go into Safemode, have you tried letting it just sit for around 5 minutes?

What happened prior to the incident? Quote from: Zylstra on June 20, 2007, 12:37:22 AM

Thanks for replying so quickly
I don't think he has a system restore cd any way around this?
I have no idea what antivirus was installed.
Last good config just goes onto a black screen.
Yea i've tried leaving it in safemode for quite a while and it just stays there.
Do you have any shiny fancy disk titled "Windows XP" or "Operating System Installation"?

There is not really any way around not having the disk hi there... well, the best option to your problem is to choose Last known good configuration instead of using start it normally... it is normal that informations about system32 will comes up.. system32 is located at windows inside your drive c:.....

if nothing happens,,.... and your computer hangs up...,, the best solution for that is to reboot your pc and make sure to indicate your 1st boot device.. it's either your harddrive or your floppy....... -pao Quote from: pao on June 20, 2007, 06:46:19 PM

Last good config just goes onto a black screen.

Being that the boot menu is displayed, Windows is located on the main Hard Drive [partition] and is bootable without a problem. No devices are interrupting So i'm going to have to buy a windows cd to make this computer work?

I was looking around and noticed how some people use a boot diskette, or something like that. Would that work in my situation?

If i were to buy a windows cd, would it be better for me to get windows xp or windows 98 (that's what the computer originally had)?you could ask around and see if you could borow a friends copy. I have donr this countless times. if you were to get a new windows c.d, you should re format your computers hard drive. do this if ur experienced
Ok, im going to ask around to see if anyone has one. Since the comp. has a windows98 sticker on it, does that mean that i have to find a win 98 cd?

When i do get the cd, i just put it in and it will start by itself?

Thank you everyone for helping me out.Sorry, just got lost in the world of diagnosing:
Which operating system are you using?

(All possibilities:
ME, 2000, and XP)
On the computer i'm on now, windows xp. On the one i'm trying to fix, it's win 98.

But i tried something new with it. Since the hard drive is the one having a problem, i replaced it with another hard drive that i had laying around. I put it on and it STARTED working PERFECTLY.
EDIT- If you think this was a RETARDED move, please let me know.

Since the only way of fixing the other one is using the win 98 cd, i'll wait til i find someone that could let me borrow it, and maybe i'll change the hard disk back with its original.

THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED!!!!!! If it's a Win98 machine you probably don't want to waste money putting XP on it...to patio,

this is true because windows x.p might not work with it any way if it is designed for windows 98.
