I am new at this, but I thought the floppy would get me back on windows or am I wrong? Thanks Merlin_2 I will look over your site, but dont know if I will completely understand it. I had a system crash on me one time and my xp home OEM would not boot into windows, so I was hoping to do just that without reinstalling the OS. and when I put the floppy into the pc, all I saw was the A:\> (or something like that) and I did not know what to do next! Hope I am making myself clear?Did you create an EMERGENCY Repair Disk?Creating a bootdisk allows your CD-driver to be used on startup, it also contains programs such as Fdisk that can help you create and delete partitions.Tom, Hello Everyone: I made a Start up Floppy but don;t know how to use it. When I put it in the pc all I see is A:\> What do I do next? I am using XP Home OEM Thanks, Tom. What you need, if you don't have an XP CD, are six floppy diskettes and then download the appropriate file from the Microsoft XP Bootdiskette link below, depending on which Service Pack you have installed, and double-click on the file to make you a SET of SIX bootdiskettes. Basically this will allow you to start either an installation of an XP CD, if your BIOS won't allow you to boot directly from an XP CD, or it will allow you to use the Recovery Console. It is very important to know which service pack you are up to. You should be using SP2. As you have an OEM install it is also important that you order the Free XP SP2 CD from Microsoft. When you next have to recover from a crash and have to do a full re-install, it is best to install the basic XP Operating System (If your OEM software will allow you to) and then immediately add SP2 from the Free CD. You can then run chkdsk & defrag and install the rest of your OEM software, if it is still up-to-date. Some OEM machines have the Recovery Console installed to the hard-drive. You might be able to use one of your OEM CDs, but if not then borrow an XP CD (You do NOT need the ProductKey!) put it in the CD-ROM drive, and, whilst on-line, type: (CD-ROM drive letter):\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons , and press Enter. Windows will contact the Microsoft Download centre and install the latest Recovery Console files to your hard-drive. On the next re-boot, you'll see a 30 second count-down timer which allows you to choose between allowing Windows to boot normally or pressing the down arrow to allow the Recovery Console to load. You can reduce the timer to 4 seconds in your Control Panel, System, Start-Up & Recovery, Settings. (Top timer) Leave the second timer at 30 seconds. You'll see why when you need to use the F8 key. It takes longer to read. If you have to change your BIOS settings to allow you to boot from your OEM Master CDs I find it easier to download oldbios.exe from http://ebcd.pcministry.com (Downloads, bottom of page.) and double click on it to make a floppy bootdiskette. What I do instead of altering the BIOS is to put the oldbios bootdiskette in the A: drive and the XP CD (and all manner of bootable CDs) into the CD-ROM drive. The computer will then boot to the floppy drive and be re-directed to the CD-ROM drive and load the CD. You can do this with an XP CD too, if you want to load the Recovery Console from the XP CD. Loading the Recovery Console from the XP CD takes longer, which is why I prefer to install it to the hard drive. Quote You may want to look here?>http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy33.htm You lost me on that one ... Try the EBCD 060 Bootable CD and oldbios.exe from http://ebcd.pcministry.com You'll need WinRAR to open the EBCD .RAR file to make an Emergency Boot Compact Disk from the .ISO file which EBCD 060 will make for you. The beauty is that you can add your own keyboard and language settings, and update components. http://www.windowsreinstall.com/oem.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------------- mac....You lost me on that one ... -------------------------------------------------------------------- the website i posted do you visit it mac>http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy33.htmNo. |
