Answer» Almost at random I am locked out of all programs. When I say locked out I mean: I lose internet access (Even though I'm still sending and receiving packets), can't open or close programs (task manager excluded), if I attempt to ctrl-del and end the program through the process the task manager stops responding. Now this doesn't happen all the time, sometimes I'll have the PC on all day and it won't happen once. This issue actually started to happen before my clean install which is why I think it might be hardware related. It didn't start to happen until a few days ago and I reinstalled my OS about a MONTH ago.
Windows xp sp3 Asus m2n-e motherboard (not sli) 4 gigs of ram Ati HD 5670 1 gig phenom ii x4 970 be 3.5ghz (Running at 3.2ghz due to a previous issue that I don't want to get in to) 600 watt ps Currently running Comodo firewall and avast! antivirusHi, good day!
In order for someone to help you diagnose your problem, they are GOING to need as much information about it.
What hard drive do you have? How big is the hard drive? How many free space do you have in your hard drive? Did you add any new hardware to the system? If so, what? Did you install any software? If so, what? What programs do you have running? What programs and/or services start up automatically?
Please try to be as exact as you can be.Harddrive is a Seagate 120 gig I've had it since I built the pc (so 2-3 years not sure). 12.4 gigs of free space. Newest hardware would be my cpu 970 be. But that was months ago.
No real new software: steam, SKYPE, firefox, foobar2000, nvidia control panel (allows me to change my cpu multiplier if I don't want it running at full all the time), video drivers (Catalyst control center), soundmax headphone drivers, Speedfan, my antivirus & firewall, games from steam, coretemp, setpoint (mouse drivers), and winrar. That's about all I have on this PC.
Startup is just foobar, skype, setpoint, catalyst, avast! & comodo.
What I have running most of the time: anything in the startup section + steam. I was always under the impression that you should always have more than 10% free space on the drive. You are on the limit. This could be the problem.
Can you do a back up or transfer files to another PC and see if the problem persists.I'll try that thanks. Just an update it happened 3 times in a row just a few minutes ago. I was just writing out my previous post and it happened. The only programs that would start are the smaller ones like media player classic and foobar still worked and played songs fine. Each time I restarted my PC the problem was there as It was loading all my startup programs. So I left it off for 10 minutes then started it back up and no problems so far.Have you done a disk clean up? Start> accessories>disk clean up. With only 10% free space you probably won't be able to do a defrag.Like I said pretty recent reformat so not sure if defrag or disk cleaner will help much. But I'll do them both and I'm at 23% free space now so we'll see if that does anything.Okay, you now have 23% free space. Kindly observe your PC if issue will still occur. Quote Currently running Comodo firewall and avast! antivirus I would think that you are using Comodo Firewall + Antivirus together with Avast. Double check on what type of package you have installed. You cannot run two antivirus or real time protection features as that would make your PC stall. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=printpage;topic=76946.0 Quote from: jason2074 on July 18, 2011, 11:27:39 PMI would think that you are using Comodo Firewall + Antivirus together with Avast.
Maybe, but not neseccarily, thats what i run, Comodo firewall and Avast Anti-virus. Worth clearing though. It seems to happen at startup now instead of at a random time afterwards. I'm using just the comodo firewall and the avast! free antivirus. It happened again once today at startup so far. I used disk cleaner, defrag, and gained a bit in harddrive space up to 27%.Quote from: Bob_Smith on July 19, 2011, 07:17:43 AMIt seems to happen at startup now instead of at a random time afterwards.
Does it happen after you did the suggested initial solutions like disk cleanup, defragmenting, etc?
Try Safe Mode, and just observe.
- Restart your computer
- Tap the F8 key. Windows Advanced Boot Options MENU appears.
- Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected, not Repair Your Computer.
- Press Enter. Your computer begins to start in Safe mode.
- When you are finished with TROUBLESHOOTING and observation, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
I would run a diagnostic test on your Hard drive. Also check on your Hardware temp. and look for anything that goes near or over maximum. You could also try using one or a couple of Memory modules for other testing options. For any software related, I would try removing Comodo and use Windows firewall since you mentioned loosing internet connection. Look for other remnants of pre installed protection software still residing on the HD.Hi,
After you did all the suggestions, try to run Disk Error Checking. It is a procedure that displays the file system integrity status of hard disks and can fix logical file system errors.
- Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
- Click Properties, and then go to Tools tab.
- Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
- A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed.
- To run Check Disk in read-only mode, click Start.
- To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
- To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
- Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
- Once the server is in the process of rebooting, do not skip Disk Checking.
I ran the disk error checking no change. I did remove comodo firewall today and I didn't have this issue for the first time in 4 days. Started up no problem on the first try. It could just be a fluke so I'll test it a few more times and get back to you.
