Solve : Strange screensaver behavior?

Answer»

I have a NEW, freshly built system, running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
In the past, when I've used a screensaver, the desktop is blanked and only the screensaver runs, against a black background.
With this system the screensaver activates, but the desktop is still displayed, ie the screensaver is applied over the desktop and I can see both. This sort of cancels out the point of having a screensaver.
The system is a Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 motherboard, 4GB RAM, with an XFX ATI Radeon 4550 PCIe graphics card. I've updated the Gigabyte BIOS to the latest version (F3).
Everything is new and Windows was a fresh, full install on a new BLANK hard drive.

I'm a bit puzzled.Depends what Screensaver you have selected... some screensavers don't blank out the desktop image- for example, there were a few included in windows 95/98 that applied various distortions to the screen. Windows 7's "bubbles" screensaver I believe does something similiar. (draws above the desktop).

Actually, there hasn't been a "point" to having a screensaver for nearly 20 years. Thanks for that.
I am USING the "Bubbles" screensaver. I suppose I should have checked by using one of the others (like the blank screen).
I've always understood that even with LCD screens there is still a risk of screen marking if they are left displaying a high contrast image for long periods.
Plus I don't always want people to see what I'm working on if a leave my DESK for a while.

Best regards,
Brian
