Solve : Stumped - Help??

Answer»

Hey all I think this is probably one of the first times I'm posting in a forum for help with computers. I've worked with computers since I was about four or five. I typically manage my to figure things out on my own by searching forums and the all around the interwebs

Anyways, right now I own a Dell XPS M1530. 1.8Ghz dual-core, 3 gigs ram, running windows vista (blah) at the moment.

I've installed numerous OS's on different machines, many times and have never really had a problem untill now. I'm trying to load Windows XP Pro SP3 on this laptop, and it keeps giving me the " Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disc..... " error.

Now, I'm the kind of person that hates errors like this, there is clearly a hard drive present because I just got done downloading & burning a fresh *censored* windows xp installation onto my hard drive, then from my hard drive onto a cd.

I looked around and found some answers, tried somenm things - No luck.
I found a topic on some forums that the windows xp installation disc doesn't have the DRIVERS for my SATA drive or something and that I could either: Switch my HDD settings in my bios to IDE, or get a floppy disc and load the drivers onto it and have the windows cd get my HDD drivers from there.

Well, I don't have a floppy drive, especially not on a laptop as new as this. And my bios settings limit me from changing my SATA drive mode to either "ADHI" or "ADH" or something, no IDE or RAID mode..

If anyone can help me out that would be freakin awesome, so I don't waste any more of my life trying to figure this out. I've been trying to do this honestly, for about 6 or 7 hours now and I'm real frustrated.

Thankyou.I am no expert, but I would use another PC and find the driver and download and save it (do not run) then find the saved driver package and send it to the CD Drive to copy. You can then run it on the laptop. I hope this helps.
HubertThanks for the quick response, but that didn't really help. What do you mean by "send it to the CD Drive to copy" ?

I found this post, which is pretty much where I'm at:

So i'll get back to this topic after I try this "nLite" program to create a custom installation.Quote from: Gen0 on August 13, 2009, 05:24:22 PM

That could be your problem.Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 13, 2009, 07:53:42 PM
That could be your problem.

Possibly, but not. It's straight off the microsoft online download site.

Here's where I'm stuck. Any help appreciated -

I'm at the Windows XP Pro installation screen, after you format your drive and create partitions and whatnot. And It's asking me to insert the windows xp professional cd into my drive, and I do. It then it says:

"The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed"

What do I do?
At this point I don't care if I go back to vista I need some help - I must have my laptop tonight.
I've tried inserting a vista cd and booting from that cd, but a little white line blinks in the top left CORNER and then it goes straight back to the windows xp pro installation.

Anything will help - please?Microsoft has an online Download site for XP ? ?

Link Please ?So I asked myself, "Self, what if Patio is wrong? What if there is a site where you can legally download Windows XP?" So, I made my self, after much whining, perform a search of the Internet.
Our good friend Leo Notenboom informs us HERE, in much nicer prose, that there's no such thing.

I, too, now await developements.

The service pack. not the whole operating system.

Awesome program. But you'll still need a full xp disc. It's nice how we have to "battle" over where I downloaded the operating system rather than getting some decent support - shows how helpful these forums actually are.

My father works for Cox COMMUNICATIONS, they have a partnership with Microsoft - He has an MSDN account where he can download ANY microsoft OS or software ever created as well as all of the DEVELOPER tools and whatnot.

So yes, I did in fact download it from the microsoft site.

Now please, can I get some assistance rather than badgering back and forth where I downloaded my copy of windows?
have you read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311755 ? I personally haven't, but MAYBE it has some answers. You need to understand our perspective...
Being a popular Help Forum we hear all kinds of tales of woe in a Topic that will stretch 4 or 5 pages with everyone genuinelly willing to help only to find that so and so is using a black DLoaded version of whatever OS.....

So had you stated that first you would not have gotten the responses you did.

I understand, and I do apologize for not realizing that. I can assure you that none of my copies of windows are "black DLoaded versions"

I think I found my problem. I've been using DVD-RW's to save cds. I'm going to try booting with a DVD-R and let you know how that goes. I'm going to feel like an idiot if that works.Don't feel bad if it works...they use 2 different dyes in the product...
A good rule of thumb is if it's important...don't burn it to a RW.Quote from: Gen0 on August 14, 2009, 06:23:51 PM

I think that was what I was saying in my first answer to your post!
