Answer» Hello All, My computer is very old but has been working fine till recently when the desktop is seen on bootup but am not able to open any icons for a long time, maybe 5-10 minutes. The computer becomes unresponsive when on and off the internet as well intermittently .I have checked the forums but not sure if the same logs would have to be run. Therefore if you could help please. Have tried to clear startup, without success. Ran antivirus scan, without any success. Have installed the latest updates from microsoft. Details are as below: OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 BUILD 2600 OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation System Name CRIMSON-DC897E3 System Manufacturer ATI___ System Model AWRDACPI System Type X86-based PC Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~3000 Mhz BIOS Version/Date Award BIOS for Intel GC11010N.86A.0303.2005.1108.2057, 11/8/2005 SMBIOS Version 2.3 Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)" Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB Available Physical Memory 74.07 MB Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.95 GB Page File Space 1.40 GB Page File C:\pagefile.sys
Latest errors as below:
event id 54: Document C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\Model (1) was corrupted and has been deleted. The associated driver is: HP Deskjet F4100 series.
Event id 7009 Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service to connect. I see its not a particularly modern system-Pentium D 3 GHz, 512 MB RAM. You only have 74.07 MB of usable memory by the time your system gets to the desktop... which will easily be taken up by viewing flash media, and the intermittent unresponsiveness of your computer could be caused by the computer caching all its memory to the hard drive's 2 GB page file. If your hard drive is an old 5400 RPM one I can see why it slows to a crawl.
The Event Viewer error is about a printer driver not being loaded because it is ALREADY corrupted.
Use http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner to clean up all your system. I recommend it because it also helps delete orphaned registry entries which will hamper your computer at system boot.
Also, consider adding RAM to your system, which will allow your computer to run more tasks simultaneously. What is the make and model of your computer? (Your manufacturer is "ATI__," which probably refers to an ATi-based chipset. ATi (now AMD) only makes graphics chipsets today.) Your PC may have been a custom-built computer, in that case download http://www.piriform.com/speccy and take a screenshot and post it here. Thanks for that Transfusion.CC cleaner cleared out 301 MB. I will go ahead and purchase additional memory. Yes,the computer is over 6 years old.And yes it was assembled by a third party. Screenshot attached below Appreciate any further suggestions. Thanks,
[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Have just installed 1GB RAM since i have 2 memory slots only. The performance is much much better. The slow startup is problem is still there. The computer reaches the desktop quickly but when I click on an icon on the desktop it takes a few minutes to open. But if i click on the taskbar, right click and open task manager it opens immediately. So also when i hit ctrl+alt+del and open taskmanager it opens immediately.I guess I can live with it.If there is an easy WAY to find out which process or application is causing the slow bootup operation,I can try it. Thanks again

What antivirus and protection softwares are installed? Did you try running a diagnostic test for the hard drive or Windows error checking tool atleast?http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/diagnose-boot-problems-in-windows-xp-using-msconfig/1191 This may work by selectively isolating programs at boot.

This further CONFIRMS my testing & experience. Windows XP will no longer function acceptably with 512MB RAM. 1GB is about minimum but have seen 768MB do OK. I have an old P2-333 laptop with 640MB that I took back to Win2k. It's a lot faster than WinXP, but still much slower than it used to be.
