Solve : System Hangups?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a windows 7 home machine. It keeps hanging up. What I mean is the hard drive will work fine for about 10 mins and then the activity light shows soild and the machine stops working. After about 2 mins everything is back to normal.

Things I have tried....
Full system scan with 3 antivirus programs.
Checked for malware and rootkits
Ran check disk
did a defrag

All of this came back clean or good.

I am wondering if the machine has a bad hard drive (WD10EADS00M2B0) or the data is corupt. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
1) You do not currently have more than one AV installed, do you? If so, uninstall all but one.
2) What happens in safe mode?
3) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?I only have on AV program on the machine. After I ran one and it showed clean I uninstalled it and did another one because I though it was a virus and didn't believe the first one's scan.

I haven't tried safe mode. I will give it a shot.

Its not my machine so I don't know if they added anything to it as FAR as software. All the hardware is the same as when they bought it.

Looks like this is green drive. It also looks like I am not the only one with problems with it. I did a google and found a bunch of people having trouble with this drive.

I've used wdidle3 to disable parking on WD Green drives that I USE in my Tivo's.

However, you're reporting a steady green light which means activity, not parking. I'm guessing something is running in the background which is why I asked you to try safe mode.I am at work right now. I will be going over my friend's house later today to check it out. I will try safe mode then. Thanks!

I plan on running a check on the drive and see if its bad...

I tried to run the machine in safe mode. It didn't clear the problem. I then download and installed western digital's hard drive tool and ran a check. It passed all tests.

I am going to try to change the cable and also try another sata connection.

Just an update.

I changed the cable and it didn't help with the lockups. I then downloaded and ran the hard drive tool to check the drive. It passed all the tests.

I then changed the power setting so the drive never stops spinning. This seemed to help. I now notice that the drive can go for about 1 hour before it seems to dump a LOT of data that maybe cached.

I checked to be sure that the system is set to let windows manage the memory and it was.

Last night I downloaded and installed SP1 in a hope that it would help. I am still testing it so I am not sure if that did any good.

On a side note, the USER who owns the machine seems to use the switch users alot. I am wondering if the drive maxing out is really windows dumping data from the other open session.

Thanks
