Solve : System Icons and Registry Issues.?

Answer» HEY everyone.

Just wanted to say, if this message SEEMS too direct, I apologize, its the second time I'm writing it out. (Nudged the back shortcut on my mouse... /facepalm)

I was changing a few icons that I doubt microsoft intended to be changed.
Start menu, System, and Drive Icons, among others.

Everything was perfect, until I rebuilt my Icon Cache with TweakUI.
I had thought that rebuilding that would make it so all of my icons would be saved as the default icon scheme. (LIKE shell32.dll is the default icons, I wanted my icons to be default in case anything happens, I can just change it back to the way I had it).

So, I began re-moding the registry keys that hold the location of the default icons of the various icons.

worked for all but 3, run, search, and control panel in the start menu.

The registry keys for the default icon of each of these still shows the location of my custom icon, yet it shows the windows default icon in the start menu (see screenshot)

How can I get this to work PROPERLY again?

What does removing the Icon cache do?

What are the side affects of removing the icon cache?

If I rebuild my Icon cache after removing it, will it make all of the custom icons be replaced with the windows default icons, or will it make my custom icons the default ones?

Is there anyway to save all my current icon settings to a scheme that I can revert back to if anything changes? (Free solutions only please)

THANKS for any and all help,

Post above has been editted, added more info.Deleting IconCache does no harm. It'll be rebuilt on computer restart.
I don't know, if it's gonna help in your case, since you made some other changes, but it's worth to try.
If it doesn't help, try System Restore.
I appreciate the info.

What I'm worried about is this:
When the IconCache is rebuilt, it will rebuild all icons that are used in shell32.dll, not my custom icons.

As far as system restore, thats a bit extreme.
All of my icons work, they are just not cusotm icons anymore.the icon cache cache's icons for use by the shell. However, the icons should be loaded from the respective locations designated n the registry- changed by tweakUI or whatever tool you employed to change the icons.

If the icons are showing up as generic windows icons, double-check to ensure the source of your custom icons is still valid.
