Solve : system restore destroys free space?

Answer» LAST night I had 16 gigabytes free on my computer.I did System Restore because something minor wasn't working right. After the system restore was done, it had 13 gigabytes free. I was like, what the heck? So I did system restore again, and it came up with 9 gigabytes. That's half my free space gone! I did system restore one more time to try to go all the way back to last month, and now it has 6 gigabytes left!!!!!!!!!! Two thirds of my free space is gone!!!!!!!!!!! Why?

I have windows xp, file system NTFS

Thanks in advance for the assistance.Define "system restore" (EXACTLY what are you doing)?Hi, thanks for the reply.

I go to Start Menu-->Help and Support-->System Restore.

Any other INFORMATION you NEED, let me know.

Thanks again for the reply.Okay. Have you emptied the recycle bin and the temp folder?Hi Allan. I have emptied the recyle bin and temp folder.Okay. Please do the following:

1) Either use "Disk Cleanup" and delete all but the current restore point OR disable System Restore (all restore points will be deleted immediately). Then empty the recycle bin and see how much free space you have. You can re-enable it immediately afterward.

2) If STILL a problem, download and run treesize to see where the space is being used (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml)

By the way, you might want to start using disk imaging software on a regular basis. It is more reliable, more comprehensive, and better than system restore.I run XP. I just moved the Control Panel-->System-->System Restore tab from the highest it could go all the way down to 1%, restarted my copmuter, and nothign changed. It's still at 6 GB....... :-(
