Solve : They got me! Windows won't run executables.?

Answer»

Searched for similar problems, but didn't see my specific ISSUE. I've got a Dell Inspiron 6400 that's a few years old. I think my problem started with something I downloaded...started getting what I believe was a virus that would pop up from my task bar asking about using a tool to protect against viruses. A day later none of my programs will open, including internet explorer or my wireless connection. I downloaded spybot using another computer and transferred it to my computer via cd. My computer won't RUN/install the program, and asks for a program to use to open the file (none work). Computer starts and shuts down fine, but nothing works. Thoughts? Help? Thanks! Did you try to install, run programs from Safe Mode?
If it doesn't work from there, you may be facing reformat/Windows reinstall.Quote from: Broni on February 23, 2008, 08:53:46 PM

Don't you hate it when viruses win, man its annoyingFile association fixes.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htmFile associations worked. Thank you so much! You're lucky. I'd still recommend checking your computer against malwares.Usually when that Happens it is Malware that is the root cause. But I've found a way to open REGEDIT and change the appropriate keys, dodging a reinstall (of course, a reinstall would guarantee a malware free computer, but I have two computers, and the one connected to the NET doesn't have any valuable data (and can dual-boot anyway)).

Of course, the problem has been solved, but somebody might find this information at least interesting!

Unfortunately, it only works on Windows 2000 and higher. Oh well.

1. Open Task Manager (thankfully, Windows doesn't "ShellExecute()" the task manager, rather opening the process directly...).

2. Select "New Task" and enter Regedit.exe Regedit should appear.

3. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

(if any keys along the way don't exist, create them)

4. Change the (Default) value to "%1" %* (including quotes)

Executables will now open properly.

As a Note, I strongly dislike re-installing windows. Don't know why, I've only done it hundreds of times...
