Solve : this is frustrating?

Answer»

I recently was trying to fix my moms computer, and I installed Windows 2000 over her stock Windows ME(she has an HP Pavilion), and now I am having a hard time getting her modem to work. Windows 2000 isn't even recognising her modem or something, becuase when I try to add the modem, it says windows can't find it. Windows isn't even detecting it as a plug-in-play device I don't think. So I can't add it manually because I don't know the name of her modem.

Also, I tried to put in her HP recovery disk after installing windows 2000 but now it is saying "RECOVER was Aborted", "Error no hard disk was found". Which doesn't even make sense because there is obviously a harddisk otherwise I wouldn't of been able to install Windows 2000???!?!

So if someone can please try to help me with figuring out why her modem is not showing up in windows that would be great. Or if someone could tell me how to get her HP recovery disk to work again that would be great too.

It's usually not a good idea to install one OS over the top of another...even if it is an upgrade...most of the time you end up with program or driver issues.

If you know th make and model of her computer, you can visit that manufacturer's website to download and install the drivers for the Windows 2000 operating system.

If it were me...I'd format the hard drive...as LONG as there is nothing she wants to save on her computer and do a clean install of 2000...hopefully we're talking legal version here.

If you can provide me with the make and model of the computer...I'll give you a LINK to download drivers for 2000.She has an HP Pavilion 8756C. Also it was a clean install, i formated her hard drive before installing windows 2k.

Thanks for the help!!You're welcome.

Here's a link to download the drivers for her computer, however the only available operating systems are 98, Me, XP and other Independent operating systems.

You may want to try downloading the drivers for 98, Me, and XP and see if any of those work for 2000.

If we knew the make and model of your modem...it may be EASIER to locate the correct driver for your operating system.  This would involve turning off the power to the computer...unplugging the cables...keeping yourself grounded...open the case and remove the modem...see if you can find a make and model number on it and post it here.  If you're not comfortable doing this, I'd recommend have some more experienced do it for you...or thry the drivers for the operating systems recommended above.

Good luckI looked up the model number of her computer and it says it uses the Lucent Win Modem. What version though I don't know Is there any identifying label at all on the modem ? ?

Look on the back or bottom...

Or if there is an FCC ID# you can just type it into google and it will give you more info...patio...

I checked the Lucent drivers page here at CH...

Apparently you'll have to create an account to obtain the driver for it.

There are also other sites you can probably get it at, but again...you'll have to register.

The funny thing is...this a a standard modem driver that you can obtain from going to Windows update.

I gave it the old college try.I would try any Zoom modem driver that's matching the speed...back in the day they wrote the best drivers IMHO.Follow up...

Use the following link to choose a generic modem that comes close to the one you have.

If this gets you connected to the Internet, then visit Windows Update to download and install the latest driver installed on your computer...otherwise...GO out and spend about $15 (USD) for a new modem.  You can even find them cheaper online.Ok I just decided to reinstall Windows ME with her HP recovery disk. It said that I had to use FDisk to "prepare" the hard disk. I hope I did this right, first I deleted my old partition, then I had it create a primary DOS partition. Then I said yes for it to use maximum space.

I rebooted my computer and now the recovery program is running correctly(i think).

Am I using FDisk right?? You have erased the drive and prepared it for formatting.
However you can use the WinME boot CD to continue...
