Solve : To Restore or Not To Restore. That Is The Question?

Answer»

Ok everyone, I'm getting a little tee'd off because l keep getting all these niggly little (and sometimes serious) problems, keep posting questions everywhere on the forums, and waiting for replies. Please don't get me WRONG, l get all the right answers but am thinking can l be doing with all this hassle. From ye olde memory bank, my system used to be Windows 98, and l upgraded to Windows XP Home using their UPGRADE disk only.
A year ago l had one hel* of a problem, took the guys my upgrade disk and they somehow restored my system but took deep breaths in saying that this was only an upgrade disk, and it sure did cost me a small fortune!
(I had no programs to save before they restored as these were all on an external disk and could be recovered). The SITUATION is still the same.
I am finally changing from a dial up modem to adsl within the next week or so (yep, l LIVE so remote it's unbelievable, but they've finally upgraded the LINE so am looking forward to it).
I thought maybe a clean slate. Start from basics, reload all MS updates, to that of SP3 and IE8, and then l won't have to bother you with stupid questions on SOLVING problems on the fly?
So, how do l go about a complete restore with just this (genuine) Update disk?
Gosh, l hate to do this as it may be called bumping the thread which is never my intention.
"From ye olde memory bank, my system used to be Windows 98, and l upgraded to Windows XP Home using their UPGRADE disk only".
So l suppose all l want to know is can l rebulid a working system from an Upgrade disk or do l have to go back to Windows 98 and start again.
Sorry to be a pain/dummy

You can't. You need full version Windows CD.Thanks Broni for answering.
(Oh bu33er springs to mind)
So in my case, with this *censored* update disk, could l reformat the C drive, reinstall Windows 98 from my genuine disk and then apply the genuine upgrade disk and start over?
Sorry, just looking on the pessemistic side in case of a total system rebuild.
(just wondered how these computer shop guys did it with just my upgrade disk. that's all).
Have they got something l havn't?
Thanks

That's possible.
If, while installing XP, Windows partition was formatted as NTFS, you'll have to use bootdisk to remove that partition.
Once removed, you can boot from Windows 98 CD, create new partition, format it, and install 98.
Then, upgrade to XP.
