Solve : Tower and Monitor are NOT cooperating!?

Answer»

I have a personal computer that my family uses for games, school work...  The other day a little box showed up in the right hand corner saying something about not enough power for a usb connection.  Then the monitor when off and I haven't been able to get it to come back on.  I disconnected all of the usb cables and tried that. Nothing.  I PUT the personal monitor on my business computer and the monitor works fine.  It has to be something in the tower.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I live in a very small TOWN and trying to find someone to look at the computer is almost impossible.  The tower seems to be working.  When I turn it on there are no weird noises and it comes on smoothly.  If anyone can offer some advice I would appreciate it.  My family is now using my business computer and it's driving me nuts!  Thanks, t.l.k.

Hp Pavilion
Windows Home Edition
Monitor: hp Pavilion VX74
Tower: hp Pavilion a705w
Intel
System: pj562AA
Serial: CNC4401C2XThe best thing i can suggest would be for you to remove a side PANEL and CHECK inside that all fans are running properly and that all components including the video card and RAM are seated properly...as always when working inside the tower make sure to remove all power sources and take all ESD precautions.
Check for dirt/dust while in there if it is messy use compressed air to do some housekeeping.
Has this machine been moved recently ? ?Hi, Yep, I have tried all of that.  There was some dust bunnies, but they blew out quite easy.  No, it hasn't been moved.  It's just really odd.  The monitor on button comes on green, then goes to yellow and stays there.  There is not even a blip on the screen.  But I've tried the monitor on another computer and it works fine.  Thanks for your advise, t.l.k.If this is an add on video card it MAY have just gone bad...can you try hooking up to the onboard video instead ? ?Way past my computer expertise!  I'm not a novice, but I'm nowhere near brilliant at it.  I know the basics.  If you could explain the steps, I'll follow them to the letter.  Thanks a lot for trying to help.  t.l.k.I tried putting the business monitor onto the personal computer with the same results.  The on light goes green then turns yellow.  Are there 2 connections on the back of that machine that look similar for the video cable hookup or just one ? ?Just one. Just one.

Oh Snap.

I'll attempt to be helpful now.
Try unplugging the power source, and THEN holding the power button in for a good 30 seconds or so.

Then plug the power back in, and try turning it on.

Or, borrow a video card from someone and install it.

-rockIf you try a video card, it will have to be a PCI card.  That computer has no AGP slot, per HP Pavilion a705w Desktop PC -  Product Specifications
