Solve : Trouble! Please help! My monitor is blank and black.?

Answer»

This is what I did:
"""Removing Old ATI Software
Click on Start, then Control Panel, then go to Add/Remove Programs.
At the top of the list you should see several ATI entries. Select the entry entitled ATI Software Uninstall Utility, and click Change/Remove.
You will be PROMPTED to restart your system once the uninstall is complete.
Once restarted, check the Add/Remove Programs list again for any remaining ATI software.
If any ATI software is still listed, click Change/Remove on those entries to uninstall each one individually.
Next, please SCROLL through the list until you find an entry called DAO (see screenshot below).
Select DAO, then Click Change/Remove to uninstall this program.
If you do not have the ATI Software Uninstall Utility listed in the add or remove programs list, you can simply uninstall each listed ATI component by clicking on it, then clicking on the Change/Remove button. """

And then I installed the RadeonX300 and attempted to run it, but it now told me that I need to install Directx8 first.

Everest says you have directx9.0c installed, re run Everest & check it.
Use msconfig to confirm this.

When you downloaded the X300 drivers what type of file did you get, was it an exe file?FieldValue

I did get an exe file when I downloaded the x300 drivers.By the way, I downloaded the Catalyst Drivers from the Radeon site. Were those the ones I needed to download?Yes Catalyst drivers sound like the right ones, did you download
8-7_xp32_dd_65993.exe to your computer then double click on it?Yes I downloaded the catalyst drivers and double clicked on it. I also "ran" it and I got the same error message that I needed Directx 8 installed.

I don't believe you can remove or even roll back directx but it wouldn't hurt to reinstall directx9.0c. Did msconfig report it as 9.0c too?
Do you have any of the original software for that computer, perhaps that will be of some use.unfortunately I dont have any of the original software for this computer. Where in msconfig do I check to see if it reports it as 9.0c too?Does anyone know if i can install any other drivers besides Radeon x300 to correct this? The x300 requires that I have Directx 8 installed and I can't find it anywhere!Oops, I meant to say dxdiag, sorry about that.
I think dxdiag will report the same as Everest.
You could TRY contacting Dell and Radeon, maybe they can help.
