Solve : Unable to use hotmail, cpu usage jumps to 100%?

Answer»

For the past couple of weeks I have been unable to check my hotmail accounts on my home computer. The hotmail accounts themselves are fine as I have checked them from other places. I am otherwise able to surf the net normally (or as normally as you can with dial-up lol), the only thing I cant view is my hotmail inbox.

A few more specifics. I can get to the hotmail home page to the point to put in my username and password but after doing so it acts like it is LOADING and then eventually just says "done" in the status bar and goes to a blank white screen. At this point my computer LOCKS up. Using task manager I see that my CPU usage jumps to 100%, when I try close iexplorer dumprep.exe then appears with CPU usage 100% on that. At that point the only way I can do anything is to end the task from the task manager.

I also have tried to get into hotmail by going to msn.com and logging in that way. I can sign in to my msn but when I actually try to go to hotmail the same PROBLEM as stated above happens. Everything else seems to work fine just the hotmail problem.

I did recently find two viruses/spyware on the computer they were "doubleclick" and "right media" but think/hope I took care of them. I would appreciate any suggestions I dont use my crappy dialup at home for much but I really do need to check my email frequently. Hovering over the task bar icon in the notification tray is a waste of time. All it tells you is CPU Usage.

It is far more important that you open Task Manage, select the Processes tab, and tell us WHAT "Image Name" is using all the processor.

I would GUESS it is iexplore.exe - but any solution based on a guess is risky.

He did say he opened Task Manager. My bad.

BUT what good has that done ?
We still do not know what took 100%.

I have seen 98% usage by my antivirus getting its teeth into something,
I have see my Firewall using all the resources to keep something at bay.

NB I have never seen anything, including dumpreg, use 100%,
there has always been at least 1% taken by Task Manager to show who uses what.

Having had IE now and again all but lock up with a SITE - seemingly some response to a page coding - I wonder if you can get round this by using Firefox .... just to see.?Thanks for the response so far. I am OPENING task manager to view the usage and it is ieexplore that jumps to 100% when I try to open hotmail and then dumprep.exe when I try to close it down. It only does it trying to access hotmail no other site. I will load firefox and try that.
