Solve : UNKNOWN DOWNLOADS?

Answer»

Could any one please advise me as to the reason I have noticed large unknown downloads of up to 200 mbs. I have checked Microsoft AUTO updates etc but can't track down the reason. I don't have wireless connection but could it be possible some one could hack into my computer to use my download .
Many thanks.
Barry M.Good morning bargun and welcome to CH

OK I must say I don't know what you are talking about or referring to, where are you getting the download information from? You getting this from your router, your download folder or ? is the 200 MB that you are talking about is this all at once or is it over a period like a month or so.

To answer one of your questions if someone could hack your network yes it can be done. Now you said that you don't have wireless do you mean you don't have wireless on the PC or do you have a wireless router even if you if don't use it on your PC?

But I don't know what OS (operating system) you have but there are many windows updates alone that can be 100's mb to almost a 1 gig.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike Hello Mike.
Thanks for the welcome and I guess I don't know too much of what I'm talking about either but here goes. I use NetWorx meter to moniter TRAFFIC and the 200 mbs was all at once and no microsoft updates were LISTED . I have a vista 32 bit and it's cable , not a wireless connection . I don't have a wireless router . This has only happened once before , it was about 100 mb, also checked for m'soft updates but none scheduled . I just assumed it was some auto update in my system but this big one concerned me as I only have a 2 gb download allowance per month. Is there any softwear to check on what downloads have occurred ?
Thanks for taking the time to reply Mike , I appreciate the help.
Cheers for now.
Barry.

PS. Hope this makes it a little clearer ,bit of a novice at technology.Perhaps this free software application can give you a better handle on what is taking place re these unknown downloads.

Barry. Can you locate as to where this 200 Mb of downloads is?Thank you jason. No , I have tried everything but I can't seem to find any softwear or info that can pin point as to what is happening . I don't think I'm being hacked but would just like to know what and where it was downloaded to. Guess
I'll just have to hope it is not GOING to be a regular occurrence .
Cheers.
Barry. If you are sure about the size of the file, you can use treesize http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/Did you consider the POSSIBILITY that it might be browser updates?

They too can eat bandwidth.

Often automatic browser update, flash player updates, java update may run up that much tab. However, all at once is very less likely.Thank you again Jason and Rishav.
As to the updates you mentioned , Rishev , I do those manually so it's not them but I contacted my ISP . ( Telstra here in Australia ) and he suggested that this can be a normal updating process in the computer , and also happens on startup , as was the case in one instance and up to 200 mb. he didn't see as a great concern. Have not had any recurrence to date but I only reboot a couple of times a week as I keep it in sleep mode for quick startups.
I guess I can call the problem resolved so thank you to all who took the time to help me out , much appreciated.

Cheers.
Barry.
