Solve : UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME?

Answer»

Dell Inspiron B130 laptop
Win XP SP2
Hard drive is Western Digital

Problem:
Blue screen of death.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
STOP: 0x000000ED (0x82390E30, 0xc000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Can’t boot up computer. Can’t boot from safe mode or any of the options (last known configuration, etc.)

Downloaded the 6 floppy setup bootdisks from Microsoft to get to the recovery console. Can get into the recovery console but cannot run chkdsk. Gives me autochk.exe cannot be found. I’ve tried specifying c: \windows\system32. No dice.

Then ran FIXBOOT c:. Restarted but still get blue screen of death same error msg

I have a lot of PHOTOS on the laptop that I was about to back up the same day the blue screen of death appeared. Bizarre coincidence but…my main concern is getting to those photos and saving them, but I’d also like to try to fix whatever the problem is.

My next step is to download the diagnostics for the western digital hard drive once I open the laptop and find the exact model or whatever. I can’t get this info. By going into BIOS.

Any help would be appreciated. For ex. Should I try the fixmbr or leave it alone for now?

Thanks.

Try chkdsk /r.
Then after that try fixmbr and re-boot.Ok. Will try this. Except now it's telling me that floppy #6 is damaged so I have to run the set again. So, I can't get to the recovery console. I'll be back later then.

HeleighAfter trying "Patio's" instructions and if you are lucky enough to possess an actual XP Pro Disc you could try a repair installation, as long as you do not go as far as formatting the drive data can still be rescued, so make make format the last resort.
You could also try a Live Linux like Knoppix Live from here:- http://www.knoppix.net/get.php,
download the Free ISO using a Torrent, burn it to a CD then run that it will load into Ram and then ith all the software in the CD you can examine the Laptop drive, then if the Laptop is capable of networking you could transfer all the data and photos you want onto another computer. floppy data damage unfortunately is very common when trying to make any XP rescue disk set. it is not a very reliable tool.Yeah, I've discovered that. This is the 3rd set I've made. Or more correctly my DAD has been nice enough to format for me since he has win xp home ed. as well. I have a desktop with win2k so can't even create the floppies from my computer. Major PITA!!!!UPDATE -- Success

For anyone else with this problem:

Previously when I entered the command chkdsk /r I got an error about autochk.exe not found. Typing in C:\windows\system32 did NOTHING to alleviate the situation. The autochk.exe file is found on Win2K (my desktop) and can be used. My dad couldn't find it on his WinXP Home computer BUT was able to find it on the installation recovery disk.

Anyway, I was able to download autochk.exe to a floppy (A: drive) and then place it in the A: drive on the laptop. BTW, my laptop didn't come with a floppy drive only CD-Rom so I bought an external floppy drive that plugs into the USB port.

That did the trick and I am now successfully running chkdsk /r on the laptop.

LATER:
It says it found and fixed one or more errors on the volume.

Next, I TYPED exit to escape the recovery console. It restarted and the blue screen came up again. So I rebooted and went to Last Known Good Configuration and Win XP started right up. Success!!! I am now furiously moving my pics to thumb drives--just in case.

Thanks.
Heleigh

PS I didn't need to run fixmbrQuote

The autochk.exe file is found on Win2K (my desktop) and can be used.

Not sure why it would be on your Desktop but for future reference it can be found in 2 locations in both XP and Win2K:

Winnt\system32\dll cache
Winnt\service pack\i386.

From the XP CD just search for it in i386...
