Answer» i'm using gateway desktop with vista home (ugh!). it came with a dvd writer (ide i think) a sata hard drive and media readers. i added lightscribe dvd and every thing works ok except my original dvd drive is now LISTED as a hard drive and can't be accessed. any thoughts would be appreciated. So this is a new desktop PC with a DVD drive and you added a DVD drive. Is that right? Why not just remove the old drive? Save it for when you need it. There is little advantage to having multiple CD or DVD drives. Or and I missing something?1) so you now have your orginal HDD and the one that is the dvd HDD? (also does it show your new dvd burner) 2) do u have 1 HDD and no dvd burners shown in "My Computer"
QUESTION.... did u set the pins on the back of the dvd burners to one "master" and teh other "slave"?master and slave dvd's? have only heard of master and slave hdd.
all is normal. 1 hdd and the new dvd. old dvd appears to be available but is listed as a hard drive and cannot be accessed. don't really have to have the original dvd but it does make it easier to copy. i have a number of manuals on disks that i routinely copy.on the master/slave. i've only had master/slave ISSUES with hdd in the past. on other computers had two cd drives that were both listed as cd and worked fine. on this puter i have also portable drives that work ok. The new DVD drive that you bought, is it also IDE?original dvd is ide i think. hard drive is sata. new dvd is sata. did not touch original dvd. my computer now shows C D (recovery) gateway deal E now as a hard is actually the original dvd f g h i all media ...san disk and the like k a portable hard drive j new dvd and is listed as dvdWhat happens when you unplug the new DVD drive?haven't done that yet. have unplugged the original dvd and it disappears of course. i expect that when i unplug the sata drive, the original will work normally. try it tomorrow. What # SATA connector is being used ? ? How many available on that board ? ?thanks patio, not sure of number you mean. have 2 sata drives now. orig hdd and new dvd. mother board has 4 ports. check of bios shows the orig dvd (atapi) but on the explorer it shows as a hard drive that can't be accessed.
i've switched the jumber on the back of the drive from "cable select" to "slave" but no difference.
alas, my dream of having 2 dvd drives is dashed. thanks for all your help.Your MBoard manual will show the # on each SATA port... Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management ? ?bios disk util showed drive 0 is hard drive drive 3 is new dvd drive
