Solve : Unsuccessful Virus Erradication?

Answer»

A couple of times recently after a shut down, a mem test activated automatically and did not report anything unusual.
Have learned that I can get a tester for the power supply. Guess I should do that, since you say that the power supply could be the problem.
The only thing my friend got with her computer was "Drivers and User Documentation" for her color monitor and other software that came with her computer. She was so clueless that she didn't make a "restore" disc. Could I use any restore disc for XP?

...
It still boots, but I only get a black screen with these two choices:
"Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" or
"Continue with system restart"
If "system restart" is chosen, the blue screen comes up immediately with the KERNAL_STACK_PAGE error that I shot with my camera previously.
We haven't tried the "delete restoration data" option.
It's a 2.8 Ghz desktop w/ 512 RAM and an 128 ATI Hypermemory card that had an 80 GIG drive in it, (which is now toasted, I assume.)

Any suggestions?
Is it possible it's not being Shut Down, but going to Standby or Hibernate? The message you are getting would indicate it is. Select "delete restoration data".

No. that was a chkdsk. Different. Thanks for the info about "Delete Restoration Data." It had been on stand-by when it had locked up, so it makes sense that this routine needed to be purged. I was merely gun-shy to delete anything.

OK, since the conclusion was that it wasn't a hardware problem, (and fortunately she managed to do a backup) did a system reset as was suggested earlier. I would have done it before, but it took more info to figure out that it was control F11 to activate the partition with the restore stuff. ...so far, a qualified success.

Had the blue screen go off only once after the reset...asked someone else what the numbers at the bottom meant: STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x81756CK0, 0x81756E44, 0x80604498) and they said it wasn't a hardware problem again.
So KEPT going. Deleted lots of junk programs that often comes on new computers, including a McCafee offer that had expired.

The original restore was so old that the update page at the microsoft update site didn't work.
So I installed the installation interface when Microsoft Sec. Essentials required it, two of them - after a little poking around, got the right files for the XP OS for the update.
Updated the java, let it sit for a few hours - no blue SCREENING!
So downloaded and installed a few programs, waiting in between for anything untoward to happen...
Then I installed the printer, etc. No blue screening!
...So, we'll see how it works out over the next day... Standby is not needed for a desktop, intended for laptop to SAVE battery power. I THINK it's fixed now.
