Solve : Upgrade to Win7? |
|
Answer» Well, April is getting really close! I continue to read about various options to replace XP. One option is to migrate to Win7. I came cross the MS Win7 Upgrade Advisor (free download). Just wondering if any of you have used this and if it is reliable? Migration to Win7 looks complicated for me, especially getting into 32 vs 64 bit stuff. Some folks are buying refurbished towers with Win7. Is this a good way to go? Maybe I will bite the bullet and buy a new tower with Win8. My PC is 6 years old but has new ram sticks and HD. It works great and I hate to toss anything that still works.XP will continue to run fine loong after April...i plan on keeping my XP rig until the PC itself dies personally. As for Win 7 on a refurbished, yeah. I did that. Bought two of them.. But no all at once. Refurbished dual core towers run either 32 bit XP or 64 bit Win7. Some are limited to 4 GB max RAM. But for little more than cost of Windows 7 you get a off-lease PC that has a warranty. The attributable vendors get the reload software from Microsoft. Easy way to get Windows 7 64 bit and save some money. Yes, it will run fine but what about security? I do all of my personal FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS on my PC. Here are some firms that sell refurbished Desktop PCs with Windows 7 and authorized by Microsoft. Amazon Best Buy Tiger Direct Wallmart Do a search for 'refurbished Desktop Computer' Of course, you can buy Dell refurbished from Dell. They may have higher prices for refurbished, but you may fell better about buying from Dell. In my thinking. the USFF* is not a good idea. But they are really low price. *Ultra Small Form Factor, has no floppy and external PSU. I have a Dell 755 USFF that works fine. Don 't buy a 745. I have Win 7 installed on a Pentium 4 PC that is over 10 years old. I have the max amount of RAM installed, which is 4GB. I haven't been using it much in recent months, using my laptop instead. I also have a new build that is basically replacing the old Pentium 4. But, I did use that old system quite a lot from 2010 - 2013. Seeing the digital video output of a new PC today did push me hard in the direction of a new or refurfished PC. I just got a nice ASUS monitor which is limited by my VGA output. Sort of like watching one of my old and small SONY SDTV's after visiting folks with modern and big HDTV's.My advice...Keep the XP rig...buy a new Win 7 rig... I like it!Some good tutorials and videos are easy to find. Go to youtube.com and do a search on windows 8.1 tutorial. Although Win 8/8.1 is designed to work with a touch screen, using a mouse with Win 8/8.1 on a regular PC or laptop works fine. Why keep the XP rig? Can't I just transfer or restore images of my XP files and programs to/on the new PC? You need to install your programs on the new PC. |
