Solve : Upgrading from XP 5.1 SP1 to XP 6?

Answer»

For technical reasons I reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition from my original disc (VERSION 2002). I now find that I have XP version 5.1 SP1 and cannot update Internet Explorer Version 6 SP1 to SP2, let alone IE7. Before the reinstallation I was using IE7. Can I update from XP V5.1 to XP V6? Any ideas on how I can update to IE7?

Windows tells me that my version is out of date, but when I go to Windows Update it is unable to install all the files it says are important.SP 2 first...

Then any missing updates...

Then IE 7.Thanks Patio, however I can't even get SP2. I think it's because my XP is version 5.1 and I think I have to have a later version and I don't know how to get it (even though I obviously had a later version before the reinstallation as I had IE7)Try installing IE 6.0, I can E-mail you the installation file if you can't find it on Microsoft.com anymore. I keep it around for Windows 98 machines..Thanks again, Patio.

Since my last communication I have had all sorts of problems. I have finally managed do get XP working (I'm not sure what I did!). Someone sent me a set of instructions for downloading service pack 2 but when it was halfway through updating I received an error MESSAGE telling me that XP had encountered an error and had to close. To cut a long story short, I've finally managed to get XP running but I'm not game to try updating Explorer. My main problem now is that the existance of my sound card is not recognised. I think I'll buy a new PC!Updating SP2 online can cause any number of problems...it's quite easy for a PACKET to get dropped here or there.
Can you contact some local computer stores in your are or check the local libraries for an SP2 CD ? ?
I guarantee this will be a smoother WAY to go...
