Solve : USB=diskdrive????

Answer»

PLS help
My computer(XP) is running halfway then it suddenly restarted.
after the restart my
USB(Tevion brand) turned into a disk drive. when i clicked on it it said E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is CORRUPTED and unreadable.

I ran chkdsk but when it tried to read my USB it froze and dissappeared. Is there anyway to transfer my stufff out of the USB or to FIX it.Try taking it out and plugging it in again.  Also, your computer suddenly restarting could be overheating.  And what do you mean by "is running halfway"?i tried repluggging it and restarting my computer. I even switched my Usb to a different computer. No it didn't overheat, it was about 10 mins since i turned it on.
Running halfway means that i am using the computer
Still the same problem.

P.S Im running of vista nowI would say its broken if it won't work in another computer1.  Recovery Software.  If it recognizes the device and assigns it a drive letter, I think you have a chance to recover the data.  You could try the "TestDisk" program which runs under many different operating systems and/or from different boot MEDIA, but you'll have to learn how to use it.  It is well DOCUMENTED (so read it), but there is definitely a learning curve to using it.  Suggest you practice on a known good disk drive first, so you know what's normal.  (Don't do any writes to the good disk drive while learning - unless its expendable.)

What you want to do eventually is locate and "copy" the files from the USB device to another disk drive (after you learn how to use the program).

See the following links:

2.  Words Matter.  You need to be more precise and complete in your description of the symptoms.  A lot of information is not being communicated (because you leave it to our imagination to complete the thought).

USB(Tevion brand) turned into a disk drive.
3.  Turned Into.  What was it before it became a disk drive?  A "removable" disk drive...  Or my favorite, a "frog"...

4.  Running Halfway.  I'm going to "archive" that one.  "halfway" because it isn't able to access the files on your USB device?

I ran chkdsk but when it tried to read my USB it froze and disappeared.
5.  Chkdsk - Froze and Disappeared.  This one I'm actually interested in.
     a.  Did "chkdsk" start running and display any messages at all to the monitor before it...  well you know, "froze and disappeared"?
     b.  How long was it "frozen"?
     c.  Disappeared?  Process just terminated and "chkdsk" window went away?
     d.  What command syntax did you use?  "chkdsk e:", "chkdsk e: /f", or "chdsk e: /f /r", or something else?

I even switched my Usb to a different computer.
6.  Switched USB.  And the results were - the same...?

7.  Didn't Overheat.  Well...  You may be right about this.  Power?  Were there any error/informational messages displayed, a flash of blue screen, or did the "restart" sequence" appear to be like a normal system STARTUP?I believe those Tevion drives and others made for TV need to be unlocked before using...
Have you checked on the web ? ?1.  What Microsoft has to say about your error message:
     a.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176646

2.  Some links dealing with attempted recovery from hard drive file system formatted NTFS:
     a.  G:/ is not accessible. The file or Directory is Corrupted and Unreadable. Halp!?
