Solve : USB Port Question?

Answer»

Hello ALL   I'm NEW here and a bit green with Computers  :-/

My QUESTION is How do you test your USB port for Connectivity?

I have a Windows Millenium (Gateway) Upgraded to an XP with upgraded memory. The current USB port is a USB1. I have been told that I have to upgrade to a USB2 port to get my devices to work  :-?

I have tested the devices on a laptop to insure that they are working

What say ye Guru's    [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] [smiley=dankk2.gif]I'm pretty sure a USB 1.1 port will work fine with USB2 devices, they just won't work as fast as on a USB2 port. Quote

I believe this is true with many, but probably not all USB devices.  My USB 2.0 Flash drive will work on a USB 1.1 port but Windows displays a message saying this device will work faster on a USB 2.0 port.

Brother BOB, do you have ports on both front and back of your computer?  Have you tried all ports?  Do your USB devices specify USB 2.0?  What do the system requirements for them say, anything such as "will work with either USB 1.1 or USB 2.0"?

Soybean,
I have two vacant USB ports on the back and none on the front. I tried all ports and none work with either of two devices I tried   The Kodak camera that I'm using calls for only a USB port  :-? It almost seems like the ports are off! How can I check if they are on? I have gone into the Device manager and it states that the USB ports are working normally   I doubt that is correct
Read and do the below test to confirm if you have USB1.1 or 2.0

If your using XP a lot of issues are resolved with
service pack 2.Do you have it installed?

Edit: Read the post after mine.I was keying in on the laptop
for some reason. Scroll down a little and read what
Soybean wrote.Much Better! An add-on card might be the easiest way to resolve this.  Some of them are quite inexpensive.  For example:  Rosewill PCI to 2+1 USB2.0 Cards Model RC-100 - Retail .  This card provides two USB 2.0 ports on back of your computer.  It also has pins for connecting the wires leading to the front USB ports on your computer.

Here's a card with 4 ports on back:  ENCORE 5 Port USB2.0 PCI Card Model ENLUSB2-5PCI-BR - Retail.

This one cost $2 more but has good reviews:  Rosewill NEC 4+1 Port USB2.0 PCI CARD Model RC-101 - Retail

Of course, you'll need to open your computer to INSTALL such a card; they FIT into a PCI slot.

You might also want one or more USB 2.0 Extension Cables to easily connect to one of those rear ports without having to get access to the back of the computer.Thank you all for the feedback and the GOOD info  [smiley=dankk2.gif]
I did the check in my Device manager and I have a USB 1 [smiley=angry.gif]
I ASSUME that the USB 1 port will not work with my devices from what I'm reading here :-?
I'm going to go ahead and order the better Rosewill NEC 4+1 Port USB2.0 PCI CARD Model RC-101 That Soybean suggested [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

I'm still at a loss as to WHY the USB port I have shows no sign of connectivity when a device is connected [smiley=undecided.gif]

Thanks Again  [smiley=dankk2.gif] [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] [smiley=wink.gif] Quote

Sometimes electrical components fail. If ME came with that gateway is is at least 5 years old. Easier to use an add-on card than replace the entire motherboard.OK! GX1 Man, I'm with it!
