Not such a cheap laptop, eh? I purchased a used laptop, the windows xp pro loads but apparently is not a valid copy. What evidence do you have that your Windows XP Professional is not a valid installation? Have the "Software POLICE" come a'knocking at your door? Men in Black been sighted in the neighborhood? Neighbors suddenly stop talking to you? Lightning strikes getting closer and closer? Microsoft refuses to provide updates? See Genuine Microsoft Software It's possible the previous owner loaded legitimate instance of a "better" operating system. Was the operating system (license) part of the purchase agreement? If so, seller should have provided you with installation media (CD) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA). All of that aside, most people would assume they're good to go until Microsoft tells them otherwise. If laptop came preinstalled with operating system, its license is PROBABLY bound to that machine. As previously noted, look for a recovery partition on the hard drive and/or contact manufacturer for cost of Recovery/Restore CDs (if available). Hi Patio, Acer has responded and here is the information: Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize for the inconvenience that you have experienced. If you need to restore your system back to factory settings, note that your computer has the capability to reinstall the original factory software without needing to use CD's, as long as the hidden PQSERVICE partition still exists, and the Master Boot Record has not been DAMAGED. *Please note, this will erase all data on your hard drive. Back up all important information prior to following these steps.* There are 2 ways to access the eRecovery feature: 1. If Windows Will Start At the windows desktop, close all open programs and windows. Press ALT (located to the left of the space bar) and F10 at the same time, then release. A program should start up called Acer eRecovery. Follow the onscreen instructions. You want to choose Recovery Actions, then Install the factory default system. Should I follow this or did you have something else in Mind? Thanks While I'm not sure what you asked Acer, I'm disappointed by their response. It does not address whether they provide Recovery/Restore CDs.What is the question i should ask Acer? While the instructions Acer has given you should restore your laptop to its original specs as it shipped from the factory...there is no guarantee this recovery partition is/isn't corrupt. You can try their procedure, but before you do...make sure they can/will provide recovery CDs. This may be at a reasonable cost to you, though. |
