Solve : Virus "Protection" deleted essential files...?

Answer»

First of all let me say that i am the defination of layman. No, actually, that might be giving myself too much credit...

I have a HP Pavillion a1220n Using Windows XP Home (before) and now crappy version of Windows XP Pro (riddled with problems)

I DISCOVERED I had a virus yesterday (I kept getting promted about it) and so I ran a virus check. I didn't know it but my Mcafee subscription was over by about 2 years so i need new software.

I downloaded this: http://www.download.com/PC-Tools-AntiVirus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10742903.html

Of course I ran it and it was stuck at around 52% complete for about 2 hours so I stopped the scan and then my computer crashed.

When I restarted I was prompted to a login screen. I had never logged in on my computer before. I had no idea what my password was so i just hit "enter". That seemed to work but as soon as windows would start up it would shut down again ad infinitum.

A buddy of mine gave me his XP Pro CD and so I can use the internet and everything (after INSTALLING XP Pro) but my sound does not work now. I updated all the drivers, the speakers and cables and mixer works. I see all the audio stuff in the Devices thing but what's funny is that on my keyboard there is a volume control which doesn't work anymore and in my start -> accessories -> entertainment -> there is nothing (no volume control, nothing)

Ga! Can anyone help me? I'm very hopelessly confused and I am deploying in 6 days and need to have this all worked out so my wife can use the computer before I leave.

Thanks.First of all, when you switched from Home to Pro, was it a clean install, or just over the top?I'm not terribly sure what that means. Actually a few times when I installed XP Pro it didn't work correctly so now I have a huge list of OS's to choose from on my boot screen.

I e-mailed HP. Is there any hope of them sending me a new OS CD? WE've moved a few times since I bought this PC and I have lost the disk.Quote

This is most likely your problem.
When you do clean install, having Windows XP CD, it'll ask you, if you want to delete existing partitions(YES), create a new partition(YES), FORMAT new partition(YES), and then you install Windows. This way, you MAKE sure, everything is wiped off, and you start clean.

You should call them, instead of emailing them. I doubt, they'll send you OS CD, but for sure, they'll ship you Recovery CD, which will return your computer to the initial state. They'll most likely charge you for it, though.
