Solve : Virus Scan Warning?

Answer»

Hi all,
New to this game so just a brief query. Have run a scan using AVIRA antivir and it has come up with a warning saying - C:\Pagefile.sys. unable to open. Is this any problem or can I safely ignore it? thanks in anticipation. JEB.Hi

Pagefile.sys is a fundamental system file. It is not of itself a virus.

It is supposed to be a virtual memory overflow when the O.S. runs out of RAM, so I would expect any DECENT anti-virus to DETECT a virus BEFORE it gets flushed from RAM to Pagefile.sys.

XP is quite selfish, so it does not allow users to open Pagefile.sys.

Either AVIRA has privileged access to Pagefile.sys when properly INSTALLED, and something went wrong for you, or they ought to know better than to try !!!

I am sure that expert assistance will come by soon - otherwise you could try AVIRA support.

Regards
Alan
It's normal.
Pagefile.sys is part of the Virtual memory management. This file is locked by the operating system and there is no SECURITY issue involved with pagefile.

A big thanks to Alan_BR and Broni for their prompt replies. Glad to know I have nothing to be concerned about. I can safely do my USUAL blundering. Gr8 to be in the presence of genius! Cheers. JEB."Usual blundering".....i like that !

You'll do fine. We'll be here... Stop by anytime.
