Solve : Vista 64 bit keeps freezing and programs keep not responding?

Answer»

Hi there. My Toshiba Portege Windows vista 64 bit keeps freezing and programs keep not responding. It just started happening two days ago. I've scanned for viruses using avira and MALWARE bytes, and nothing came up. I've also tried cleaning the registry with registry easy and it did, but nothing changed, and lastly I did a system restore to before this crap started happening and it still freezed and programs keep not responding. I need some help please. Using a registry cleaner will only compound your problems. Please, NEVER use a registry cleaner again.

Boot to safe MODE. Does the system freeze there? What happened just befor the problem arose (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?I downloaded debut video capture software from the nchsoftware website, and SHORTLY after that this problem arose, the program would freeze as it was downloadng this codecs or something for the program, and then this problem arose. Sometimes windows freezes right away and sometimes after an hour. Also everytime I start my computer now it says something about daemon TOOLS error? I never remember downloading daemon tools.
So far my computer hasn't frozen in safe mode, although it has only been a few minutes. Google chrome doesn't work in safe mode but mozzilla firefox does. If the system doesn't freeze in safe mode it's probably something that's loading with your system. Open msconfig and choose "selective startup" (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does the system still freeze? If it does, we'll have to look elsewhere, but if it doesn't, start adding startup items back one or two at a time in msconfig, rebooting each time, until the problem recurs and let's see which process is causing the problem.

BTW, the fact that this happened WHILE downloading something is a little suspicious. I'm concerned about malware even though you said your scans were NEGATIVE. But let's see what happens with the clean boot process above first.

And I'll be logging off shortly but I'm sure someone else will jump in to help. I'll be sure to check back in the morning to see how things are going.Okay so It hasn't frozen yet. Right now I have added 2 items to the start up in msconfig, and restarted. Just waiting to see if it's going to freeze. So far so good. onto 5 and 6. Just have a question, when should I enable the services? Because they are all disabled.Quote from: omarandbear on August 05, 2010, 04:59:10 PM

Good Question. Download Start-up Control Panel : http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Extract file and Run. Attach the file on your next post for an overview of current programs to be reviewed and advised by moderators.
