Solve : Vista corrupts XP drive on dual boot. Help!?

Answer»

(Edit:I have a feeling that Xp and Vista handle the NTFS format differently and is not compatible but i have seen systems work with both. If anyone knows of a better place to post this problem let me know please)

Problem: When I try to boot from my XP drive i get a 0x24 error on boot

through trial and error and many OS reinstallations I have found what causes the problem

here is what I have to work with
Dell m1730 4GB ram, Intel 2.4ghz core2, nvidia 8700gt sli, 120GB sata drive, 500GB after market sata drive

Vista is installed on the 120GB drive pre-installed by dell at the factory

500GB drive is from newegg.com and is for installing windows xp for duel boot

Steps I take to get error
0)Make all parts and bios settings like they were from factory
1)remove Vista drive from slot"A"
2)install XP drive into slot"A"
3)boot from XP installation disk
4)full format ntfs, install windows
5)run windows update until fully updated
6)move Xp drive to slot"B"
7)GO into bios and change boot priority to cdrom->slot"B"->slot"A"
8)Confirmed xp drive still boots
9)install vista drive into slot"A"
10)Confirmed xp drive still boots
11)press hotkey(F12) for boot options to boot slot"A"
12)Confirmed VISTA drive still boots
13)Confirmed xp drive still boots
14)boot into xp drive and access files in vista drive from xp boot
15)Confirmed vista drive still boots
16)boot into vista drive and access files in xp drive from vista boot
17)try to boot from xp drive and BOOM!! BSOD 0x00000024
18)Confirmed vista drive still boots
18)repeat steps 0-17
19)Confirmed that accessing the XP drive from Vista drive corrupts the xp drive so it will no longer boot

I would like to know if it is possible to scan/fix the xp drive so I don't have to reinstall xp again(I am quite tired and annoyed by this process)

Even better if there is a way to PREVENT vista from killing my xp drive but still able to access files from either drive from both OSes.

I did get a different error code once before but forgot to write it down so the 0x24 is not the only code just about 90% commonFrom MicrosoftQuote from: patio on January 16, 2009, 06:14:26 AM

From Microsoft

"You experience this problem if Windows Vista is installed in formerly UNALLOCATED disk space that existed in front of the partition on which Windows XP is installed."
This is a quote from the link you sent me.

My problem comes from separate hard drives with one partition each. My boot order is not controlled by boot.ini i am using the bios to choose a hard drive to boot from for each different OS

I think what i am LOOKING for is a GUIDE on how vista handles secondary drives but this is just another guess

This setup I am trying to use works just fine as long as I do not try to access documents from the xp drive when booted into the vista drive.

The moment I open the xp drive from vista to view files is the action the causes the xp drive to bsod on boot

Other side information that leads me to believe the problem is how vista handles NTFS on other drives is that when I install xp onto fat32 I get no problems, but fat32 is limited to 4GB file size and i have lots of >4GB files
