Answer» Okay. This one has me stumped, I've tried everything I can do without actually getting my hands on the computer in question. My fiancee's laptop, running Vista SP1, has an internet connection issue. For some reason, only Firefox can get to the web. Skype (as you can see in the taskbar), TeamViewer, Google Chrome, Google Talk Plugin - none of them have access to the internet. Hamachi seems to create a relayed VPN tunnel, but then I'm unable to ping her computer via her VPN adapter. Firefox, however, maintains a decent level of access. DNS lookup succeeds, and the DHCP server on her wireless router properly assigns her IP address. When she pinged an IP address that we looked up with DNS and confirmed online, she got a request timeout. We've checked her proxy settings, and that all checks out okay. Her system just will not connect. In Google Chrome, when she makes an attempt to browse to a website using her VPN connection (EVEN the one running on my local IIS 7.5, which I've verified is online, and my firewall's port 80 is open on my VPN address for TCP connections) it shows her a net-102 error: connection refused, as if the port was not being used by a service. If she had tried to connect to my 4463 port, which I only use for a MySQL server which is not currently running, it would show the same thing - but because no service is bound to that port. However, from another computer on the VPN, I connected to and opened my site running on my IIS:80. Originally this led me to think virus, but I don't see any running process in the Task Manager that could be a virus like that - unless one's hidden in the Service Host. I've attached a few screenshots which I think you might find helpful. I've instructed her to reset WinSock using a batch script I sent her, and when she does, I'll post an update and let everyone know. But this is really bugging me, and she uses her laptop a lot. If you need any more information, just ask - please. But please, help! Thanks in advance, and good luck!

Sorry it was hard to read / see the images they are to small but If I am reading and understanding your post correct. Her PC is NOT configured to use a proxy correct? if she doesn't I would do this
Open Control Panel -> Internet Options; now at the top click the "Connections" tab.
Once clicked, near the bottom is a button labled "LAN settings"; click it. Once clicked, on the page that appears, uncheck ALL checkboxes. Click OK twice to get out of all that stuff. Close all your Internet Browser windows. Then try to get on the Internet again. That should take care of it. This should fix the "it shows her a net-102 error: connection refused"
I also would do a scan with your AV suite (anti virus suite) and malwarebytes http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=malwarebytes&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch%3Ba&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows
There is also a IE fix that I have used many, many times before that works on IE 7,8 and should work on IE9 http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=48&id=133&artlang=en this script also fixes tabs that do not want to work etc. But just be for warned it will reset the homepage, delete cookies, IE defaults etc. Please keep one thing in mind I did not write this and is not a MS way to fix IE but all I can say it works. Please use it at your own risk.
Please come back and let us know how you make out, Mike Thank you for your reply. You are correct, we have her PC configured not to use a proxy. Sorry about the images, they're available in full resolution if you'll right click and open them in a new tab. I'll let her know to run an AVG scan, and send her the Malwarebytes link. We tried configuring her computer to use mine as a proxy through our VPN tunnel, but it didn't work - she couldn't connect to my computer, even with my Fiddler2 running as a proxy on port 2082. As for the IE Fix script, knowing that IE's control panel has a lot of control over the whole system, would the script have any fix for Chrome? Chrome is her default browser, but I know it uses the system's (IE's) settings for some things.

It is very possible that the fix will help google because yes a lot of the browsers go of of IE settings. Also thank you for the images but I see there is (Symantec service Framework) is this for the old AV or ghost, backup exec? if your current AV is AVG there may be parts of SAV still on the system this may be causing you an issue so I would remove the old AV suite through windows and then go here for Symantec removal tool but DON'T use this if you use any other Symantec products otherwise you will have to re-install them https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=english&ct=us I am pretty sure that you know not to run more than 1 active AV at a time.
Please let us know how you make out, Mike We have actually been running AVG and the Symantec system in tandem for some time, and problems just started recently. Symantec is outdated, and the license is expired, so I don't believe any new updates could be the problem. We were actually PLANNING to remove all antivirus softwares and do a clean reinstall of AVG though, so if I can manage to get the internet working, I'll execute this using Teamviewer - she's not a very advanced user. I'm about to check with her about AVG and Malwarebytes scans, and I'll let you know when I do.You should never have more than one anti virus app installed.Okay, I'm on the phone with her now. She's unable to download the Norton Removal Tool - Firefox won't connect to download it. So what to do? Thinking manual uninstall for a shot.See if you can use the internet with hamachi disabled or removed. If you can use the internet then, it's a problem with Hamachi or the network configuration. Otherwise, some of the proxy configuration may not have been properly reset previously. Now I'm inclined to think it's the proxy settings since Firefox and Java are using independent proxy settings from the rest of the system. But still nothing else works. She can connect to Minecraft, she can connect (albeit limitedly) to Hamachi, and she can connect to the rest of the Internet with Firefox. But I specifically remember seeing her proxy settings are set to No proxy. I'll post screenshots here in a bit. Another thing: Norton 360 would not uninstall. The uninstaller FROZE a good portion of the way through, and just would not continue. AVG crashed when she tried to uninstall it... So we can't uninstall the antivirus suites except maybe to manually delete them, then their registry keys, then their data. But when I get there, I'm going to load her computer with Win7, I already have the DVD and activation key for her. That should resolve any problems. I'm out of town for two more weeks, tops. Any ideas?Good evening bobsklarservices and welcome back
I know that you are coming back but I was just LOOKING at your services try killing the "vprot.exe" service it maybe for AVG web site monitoring / blocking. If that doesn't work try msconfig and go to the start up tab temporarily stopping all startup's and reboot and see if it does any better.
Does she have a smart phone if so tell her to shut off the cell antenna and try connecting to the house's wireless if she can with no issues than that will tell you if it is the PC or the router etc.
Hope to hear from you soon, Mike We will try terminating AVG's vProtect service. We will also try the MSConfig startup options. As for the smartphone, all the other computers in her house are functioning fine. I'm going to use Teamviewer on mine, hers, and one other in her house to connect to hers using the other as a proxy, if you will. I'm going to do the diagnostic myself, via remote.Okay. What happened when we shut down Hamachi is that Firefox lost connectivity. It seemed that by some strange occurrence, Firefox was connecting via Hamachi, and Hamachi was connecting by some strange thread that wasn't quite broken - Hamachi showed a relayed tunnel to her PC, and I could send chat messages but could not ping and could not connect via Teamviewer (I know the configuration was good, don't worry on that one) IP connection. I'm planning to try the MSConfig thing suggested above, and if that fails, get her important stuff off (pictures with sentimental value, some DOCUMENTS, not much - about 2GB tops) and just wipe and use a clean Win7 install. Vista has always been crap when I've used it, so ever since Win7, I've used that. I would like to know if this could be a virus that is causing it though, and displaying false configuration information in the system proxy configuration dialogue? If this is the case, how would one get rid of it? Malwarebytes didn't show anything - aside from a couple things she downloaded and I told her to quarantine them so they are not there anymore. It's not Vista... It's not Win7... It's a combo of Himachi and FireFox not playin well together...probably from not being setup properly.
And it's not infection related if all your scans were run and came up clean.Unfortunately, nothing works now. Back when Hamachi was running, Firefox worked - marginally. Now nothing works, she has no Internet connectivity, no VPN connectivity, and maybe (maybe not) LAN connectivity. We're having difficulties right now so I'm not gonna try and get her to do anything with her PC, but when I get the chance, the first thing I'm telling her to do is the MSConfig - we're going to disable all startup programmes.
