Answer» I am In the process of building a new computer, Just waiting on parts. I can't legally use my old computers XP OS In my New build and do not want to fork out $200.00 for A new version. So I have a dilemma, I made a big mistake about 6 months ago and bought a copy of Vista. And I really hate It, But My son tells me, Dad all new computers have vista on It, And they are going to stop the support on Xp home Really soon. So, You guys and gals out there that are running Vista. Did they fix some of the problems with the new service pack update for Vista or Is It still bad?I just can't UNDERSTAND why they can't fix Vista with a patch. So many programs and or software will not run or are unstable on Vista. If you guys were building a new computer what OS would you use? While i won't tell you which one to go with i will clear up a few misconceptions that may help your decision making process... 1) XP has been GIVEN extended support from MS. Support including paid telephone assistance and will continue through 2014. 2) The SP1 patch for Vista had some glitches in the first Public release on April 29th. MS has addressed the issues and fixed the patch. It is now available as an update or can be DLoaded from their site. Some are still waiting to make sure the issue is completely fixed though which i would advise for now.
To make a better decision you can check ahead of time to see which programs will run on Vista but i haven't heard this as much of an issue. Drivers have been a bigger issue for older peripherals so look into that beforehand if you plan on running older components.
An OS is more of a personal choice but if you go into it well prepared you may be able to make a decision you can be comfortable with.
Good Luck.IVE never had a problem with vista on my laptop
GO WITH VISTA I am now running vista home premium and love it....I have ran windows ME. Xp and now vista....and I much prefer vista.....But like patio it's merely a personal choice. About the only complaint I have about Vista is that some programs that run well on XP and earlier won't run on Vista (not backwards compatable). Other than that, I like Vista just fine. I have a dual-boot computer with both and find myself using XP most of the time. A word in passing---buy the OEM version of Vista (and future O.S.'s) and not the upgrade. My desktop has XP and a laptop I bought a few months back has Vista. There are several things I don't like about it(mostly UAC related), but I am trying to adjust to it because I figure it will probably be here for a while. I have one older program that runs perfectly in XP but locks up frequently in Vista. Maybe the service pack would help. I haven't tried it yet.
The "User Account Control" in Vista can be really irritating if you have older batch files or zip files that want to copy files to or alter files in Program Files folder or Windows folders. The UAC will prevent the action from continuing and will usually fail. The purpose of the UAC is to prevent unauthorized programs(virus/malware) from altering your system(that's not a bad thing), so like I said before, I am trying to learn how to work with it even though It can be a pain. So far, most people that I know that have Vista have changed back to XP. Even the Computer Shop that built my computer still prefers to sell them with XP installed, even though they get bigger kickbacks when they sell Vista.Hey there.
I have used and troubleshooted both, and I personally think that XP is better.
Read http://www.newsday.com/business/yourmoney/ny-bzdolinar5655754apr20,0,1623724.column about XP and Vista - its a news article on them. Very amusing.
Who's heard of Microsoft Bob? It's mentioned in the above article, I googled it and I would recommend it. Living proof that you shouldn't listen to your partner all the time.Quote from: llmeyer1000 on May 09, 2008, 07:01:13 PM My desktop has XP and a laptop I bought a few months back has Vista. How to Turn Off UACSure I could turn off UAC, but then I am turning off one of the main security features. I could also "Format C:" and put XP back on.
I don't really like the way UAC operates, but I think that you should look at the reason it is there and learn to live with it if at all possible.
"srtony1946" wanted to know which OP system we would use and I simply told him that although Vista has some thorns, maybe it's time to learn to live with them.
Another thought is the hardware issue that was mentioned earlier. My experience over the years is this:
As a general rule, you should use the OP system that was current when your hardware was built. This is because the board manufacturers optimize their boards for the current OP system. Quote from: srtony1946 on May 08, 2008, 11:32:11 PMI made a big mistake about 6 months ago and bought a copy of Vista. And I really hate It, Why did he hate it? He didn't say. Maybe it slowed his system down because the board and memory were too old to handle it. If the "new" system board he is using is too new, it is quite possible that it would not run well with XP. He might find that he really hates XP on the new system.
The same thing happened to me a few years back when I wouldn't give up on Windows 98SE. I finally found out that XP was better for the newer boards and 98SE was better for the older ones. I have Vista on my laptop and I have no complaints.
I remember this same discussion when XP first came out. A lot of people hated it and were switching back to 98se. I dual boot with both (+ TWEAKED), on a Dell e520 PC (3.08 ghz cpu, 1.5gb ram), and like the speed, software compatibility and NAVIGATION of XP home ed., but Vista HB is more stable, albeit slower, and has better power and disk management. But perhaps Windows 7 would be worth waiting for. http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=664&tag=btxcsim
