Solve : Vista SP2 problems? |
|
Answer» I have RECENTLY allowed Microsoft to download SP2 onto my system via Microsoft updates but it doesn't seem to have worked, the first message I got after it 'configured' the update was: Some could could not be completed. Reverting changes. Will retry on startup. Plus my computer is running much much slower than before with the RAM usage up by more than 200mb than previously. Thanks Gary What is running in applications?Applications? Just the Opera browserI just upgraded to Vista ultimate myself and there were tons of updates. Vista seems to take alot of ram as well, make SURE there aren't a bunch of programs on startup that could be hogging up ram causing the install to pause etc.Startup seems fine as I use Winpatrol, so I block what isn't needed although of COURSE I allow essential programs to run, personally I feel like doing a clean re-install of my system I don't feel like going through almost an hour of installing SP2 for it not to even work properly.1) Are you running Vista Ultimate? If so, did you install any language packs? If yes, you need to install the All-language version of SP2. The five-language version won't work unless the only languages you're using are English, Spanish, French, GERMAN, and/or Japanese. 2) Was your Vista install customized in any way, shape, or form using vLite? If yes, then you're screwed, since SP2 won't install on a vLited Vista. 3) Did a previous Windows Update fail? Check for this through Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Update -> View Update History. If any updates failed, try downloading those manually from Microsoft's site and installing them first. 4) Also, try disabling any anti-virus or firewall utilities that may be blocking certain files from being updated through the SP2 upgrade process. I'd start with using system restore to before SP2 install attempt. Then... Quote try disabling any anti-virus or firewall utilities that may be blocking certain files from being updated through the SP2 upgrade processI had a problem with installing SP2 as well, and I went even farther.... Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in: msconfig Click OK (hit Enter in Vista). Click on Startup tab. Click Disable all Click Services tab. Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services Click Disable all. Click OK. Restart computer in Normal Mode. Only then, it went through. |
