Solve : VXD files are gone?

Answer»

We have an OLD computer that is used only as a timeclock at work.  Last week there was a power outage and ever since then the printer driver was missing when I rebooted the system I get a really long error message before it even gets to Windows (95) at the dos prompt that basically tells me vnetsup.vxd is missing and to hit any key to continue, it continues through 9 more missing items (nwlink.vxd, nwredir.vxd, nscl.vxd, vredir.vxd, ndis.vxd, ndis2sup.vxd, vnetbios.vxd, vppsd.386 and hput.386) then it shuts the computer down.

I am able to start at the c prompt, I just don't know how to get these items back on my computer - any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated!Bing:

Boot to Safe Mode, then follow these instructions:

If that doesn't work, boot to Safe Mode and try this:

or this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140010/EN-US/#appliesto

One of those RECOMMENDATIONS should do it!

DocHi Doc,

First, let me thank you for your help!  But we don't have internet access on that PARTICULAR PC and I'm not sure that I can hook it up anywhere.  Can I download it to a disk from my "regular" computer and then install it?

dedebing:

Are you saying you don't have the Windows 95 installation floppy disks (or CD) and asking if you may download the files?

HEY Dedebing,

I've had the same PROBLEMS and HEADACHES caused by some of those missing files.  Try putting in the 95 CD and extract those files.  They are usually in cab files so search google to figure out which cab files they are in.  At least that's how i did it.  Good Luck. We do still have the original installation and any upgrades, they are just kept offsite.  Unfortunately, it's like pulling teeth to get my boss to bring me anything I request.  Basically, I was looking for a quick solution to my problem but this is more involved than I thought it would be.  So, I emailed our business manager and dropped it in his lap - he makes the big bucks so this can be his issue now (not to mention if it's his problem he will make sure to bring the disks)!

Thank you for your help though, I definitely feel more educated about this!

No quick fix; you need the Windows installation CD to follow the recommendations of the Microsoft knowledge base articles.

You'll have to break the news to your boss.
