Solve : When doing a repair with windows xp pro it stops before finishing?

Answer»

When i use my windows xp professional with sp2 cd. every thing goes fine until NEAR the end. A window comes up that says "Please Wait" then nothing happens. I waited 2 hours then reset my computer. I think that's when it configures drivers. Is it possible that one of my programs keep it from finishing. Such as Spybot search and distroy with tea timer, superantispyware, MALWAREBYTES (free edition),windows defender, windows firewall. The cd has worked before so i don't know what changed. maybe tea timer?A few questions are needed here.
How long has the computer than working normally before this occurred?
What kind of computer already talking about here? Is this a manufactured desktop? A laptop? A home built?
Are you using a standard windows XP retail installation disk?
Have you already backed up your important files?
Do you have another hard disk drive?
Also, do you have a way of checking to see if the XP install CD works alright on another computer?
Have you carefully examined the surface of the CD to make sure there are no scratches smudges or fingerprints?
Of course, you do understand that if your copy of windows XP is not legitimate we will not be able to help you on this forum.
Otherwise, we have some of the best experts available any where.
I have had this computer for about three years. It is a desktop systemax from ABS. The disk i am using came with the computer. I have used it to do a repair a couple of times before with out any problems. I have another brand new xp oem disk and that does the same thing. It stops near the end and says "Please Wait". I don't have a second hard drive nor do i have access to another computer to test the disk. The disk has no finger prints or smudges on it. I did use a lint free cloth to wipe gently from the center out to the edge just to make sure. I don't see any scratches on the disk. I have backed up my important files on two 8gb usb drives. the only change i can think of is the addition of spybot tea timer. The disk i have is windows xp professional with sp2. I have down loaded sp3 and all the updates plus IE8. .
I did have some problems when i did the repair.
1) script error when closing system information.
2) troubleshooter in device manger would not work
3) help and support had no options in the left pane
4) no sound
When i ran the repair again even though it stopped at the same point it cleared the first three problems. I had to download Realtek ac97 to solve the sound problem.
The question i am asking  could one of the spyware programs that i MENTIONED cause this problem. If i remember right, when the disk stops responding, that is the point when it configures the system and drivers.

Thanks for the information. That does help. On this forum there are a number of articles and posts about the program you mention.

Your observation is valid. It worked before. You added a program, then it does not work right. The logical conclusion is the newly installed program interferes with some process. What do you mean you are doing a "repair"? Exactly what are you TRYING to do?Allen

What i mean by doing a repair is a reinstallation of windows xp professional from the windows xp setup disk. I started the xp setup disk and pressed enter "to set up windows now". I did not choose the R to use the recovery console. I agreed to the license agreement . I then selected my current installation of windows xp and pressed R to repair windows XP.
I was trying this time to fix the problems listed above. I hope this helps.Okay, you are doing a repair install. I just don't understand why you say it may be other programs that are installed that are creating the problem. During the repair install, Windows is not aware of your other programs. You are booting to the XP CD and CHOOSING the second repair option, correct? That essentially just installs XP on top of itself. It makes no difference what programs have previously been installed.

You might want to run checkdisk. To do this properly, boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r
After it completes you can try the repair install again, but I have to admit I'm not sure what is causing your problem if it isn't a repairable disc error.Repair Install of XP

Another option to consider (since the cost of 100 + gig hard drives has dropped to well under $75) would be to disconnect the current hard drive and install a clean XP from retail disks or restore media to a new hard drive. You can then connect the original hard drive after configuring the jumpers to a slave drive. You can retrieve important files. One thing to remember, if a hard drive has not been formatted or written over by reinstalling, the data is accessible. The less you access a hard drive after a non-boot episode; the better your chances of retrieving your data.
From link given by Patio above.

I did a chkdsk /r like you suggested and as far as i could tell it didn't find anything to repair.

I printed out "Repair installation of xp" as you suggested and tried a couple of things but no results.

It looks like your suggestion might be the solution. I'm just afraid i might have the same problem with that.

Then you did not do it properly. Once again, boot to the recovery console and then run chkdsk /r
