Answer» HI, Is there any way to tell if a file (namely Notepad) has been accessed? I recently sent my computer in for repair, and I realized that I have sensitive information (passwords & the like) on simple Notepad files on my computer. Stupid I know. What measures can I take to check if this info was accessed during that time? Any help WOULD be greatly appreciated. Thanks. JohnYou can look in Documents and SEE if any rently used files are listed there, but that is about it. Or Open Notepad and click on file and see if some are listed there. If they were smart enough to prowl, they are probably smart enough to cover their tracks.On NT-based filesystems certainly, you can rightl-click on the file and SELECT properties. In the dialogue box, you will see the time the file was last accessed. Be aware though that indexing programs (MS FindFast, COpernic/Google desktop search, etc.) will change the last accessed time.On my Win XP Pro system, "Accessed" always SHOWS the current date when I right click on a file from Windows Explorer. So, it's meaningless info.That's probably because you're running some kind of indexing program. |
