Solve : Why my C drive space keep decreasing for no good reason??

Answer»

Okay. At first i saw this brochure for my laptop saying the HDD was 320GB, when i bought it why the max space is only 286gb?? I tried to calculate every way i could but still couldn't get to 320gb.

2nd problem, why is the hdd disk available space keep decreasing for no good reason? its a new laptop so i've not download much things except for msn, itunes and such. it was like 247gb available space i saw few days back but now it is 244gb..and i've looked around and i couldn't find a reason to solve it...can anyone provide workable solutions for the above problems? pls and thanks.

Btw, the C drive's file system is NTFS and i'm using wins vista

Music files will EAT up space rather quickly as will videos. When you work on laptop your NT user file is modified at the same time temp files are generated

which takes your HARD disk space also check temporary internet files.if you have installed any software

it will be load its files in program files folder.

So, in short you have to use disk cleanup utility. to clean unwamted data1. If you never use your computer, the file system will stay the same.
2. When users make this observation, it is mostly a topic for conversation.
(Sort of like talking about the weather of the price of pork bellies.)
3. The NTFS is an improvement on the way DATA were stored in earlier PCs.
4. Using 3GB out 300GB is like one teaspoon out of a quart of beer.  hey sadlaptop,

This is a known issue in Vista: Here is the solution for you:

You need to set maximum size limit for the system restore points in Vista:

ISSUE : Hard Disk space is getting reduced on a daily basis in Windows Vista (nearly 1-5 GB per day).

CAUSE: The disk space is used by the System Restore points to store the data.

RESOLUTION:

Disable the System Restore temporarily to get the lost Hard disk space back. On doing that, the System Restore points already CREATED will be lost. To prevent this from happening again, reduce the size of disk space used by the System Restore points. To do that, type the following command at the command prompt:

Click Start, All Programs , accessories and then right-click Command Prompt. Select Run as administrator

At the C:\Windows\System32 command prompt, enter the following:

vssadmin RESIZE ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=3GB

In the above command, 3GB refers to the size used by the Restore point. We can change it accordingly. If all goes well you should see a message saying 'Successfully resized the shadow copy storage association". Your System Restore shadow storage has now been resized. This will solve the issue for sure.
