Solve : Win SP3?

Answer»

I have so far resisted installing SP3 and am looking for input: a) are there any reported problems from people who upgraded their computers from SP2 to SP3, b) are there any benefits to SP3 over a fully updated SP2? Any other comments would be appreciated.

Thanks. a) I have been running sp3 since the end of April & it works just fine.
b) It is alleged that XP SP3 is faster. Mine is certainly not slower.
I've not had any issues with SP3.
The main benefit over SP2 is NAP.
An overview is here.
Hope this helps. Thanks Calum and Dias!

I had read the MS link before but wanted to wait until SP3 had been "in the wild" for awhile so that I could benefit from your experience!

NAP has no benefit for me (that I can see) but absent any negative experiences, I guess that I might as WELL install it. I keep hearing, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," in the back of my head, though!

Thanks again for your input!NAP has no benefit for me either.
I installed SP3 partly for testing purposes and partly because I wanted to START from a fresh install, and really didn't want to install the few hundred patches since SP2 was released.
There have been some issues with SP3, especially regarding AMD machines. I would read up on the problems others have encountered in case you are likely to run into them before installing SP3, and don't forget to back up if you go ahead, just in case.Quote from: Calum on June 08, 2008, 02:50:17 PM

Ditto the "I don't want to spend another hour or two updating SP2 after I just spent an hour or two re-installing!"

Whoops - running ASUS A8NE with AMD 64 x2 4800+; I'll do more checking.

Thanks.Seems like most of the AMD problems were caused by OEM machines. I built mine so went ahead and installed SP3 (with fingers crossed!) Zero problems so far.

I also updated my wife's HP laptop - came with Vista and 1 GB RAM, so I installed XP on it in a dual boot. Laptop is Intel and had no problem with install there either.

Thanks for your responses.I have Service Pack 3 on three of my machines. No problems so far.@carbondudeoxide: Thanks for the reply.Good to hear it's running OK for you.
I've since formatted and no longer run XP Home or Pro so I can't say it's still running fine for me, but in the time I did have SP3 installed I had no issues at all on any of my machines. In a world which contains Norton Ghost and cheap DVD burners & disks, there is no reason not to to try it.You know, I've been thinking about this! And it goes something like this...I'll use Acronis (NOT Norton!) and let it have access to my harddrives at a very low LEVEL and, basically, not worry about it; I'll let Avast! antivirus engage my system at a very low level to protect against rootkits and, basically, not worry about it; I'll let CCleaner do its thing and, basically, not worry about it; I'll download utilities and use them and, basically, not worry about it; BUT, when Microsoft wants to do something to my system, I get scared as *censored*!

Go figure!Just because you believe it doesn't mean they're not out to get you...Quote from: patio on June 09, 2008, 02:11:00 PM
