Solve : win2k help?

hi,

I desperately need help with the following issue:

WINDOWS 2000 cannot start becasue the following FILE is missing or corrupt \winnt\system32\config\SYSTEM


I have tried renaming the files as suggested but I need EXPLICIT help on how to copy the registry hive or system files back over. In a foolproof method for STUUPID PEOPLE!!!

I assume you can get going in safe MODE or with boot disks.
I appear to have a system backup file in the same directory.Akmeed:

SYSTEM is one of the files that makes up the Windows 2000 registry hive.

If you have not made a backup of the registry, you will have to reinstall Windows 2000.

I have done the following:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old

then I tried,

copy c:\winnt\repair\system c:\winnit\system32\config

copy c:\winnt\repair\regback\system c:\winnt\system32\config

but files could not be copied or not found
