Solve : Win2kPro WINNT boot issue? |
|
Answer» I installed (or should say tried to install) an ext HP CD Writer. I've done this countless times before with my computers, yet this time it LOCKED up both "identical" Win2k machines that I tried to install it to..... I simply uninstalled the HP CD Writer software THRU Add/Remove and the very NEXT boot caused a lock up at the Windows splash screen - on BOTH machines. About 75% through the process. Online, many folks have gone through this, yet there was no solution that worked. One machine simply fixed itself. The other did not. I tried various things to fix it, including comparing WINNT\setup.log and drvindex.inf files to make them identical on both machines. No help. I finally resorted to using the Win2k install CD and selected the automatic "repair" option. There were SO many files that the program said were not 'native' (my word) to this distro of Win2k... So I selected the repair all option. Now I'm getting the BSD message: "Stop: c0000263 {DriverEntryPointNotFound} The \system root\system32\drivers\fltmgr.sys driver couldn't locate the entry point IoGetDeviceAttachmentBaseRef in driver ntoskrnl.exe" Thanks in advance for everyone's help.Strangely enough it sounds like a corrupt driver issue but how that would appear on 2 systems at the same time is beyond me... Try re-installing the chipset drivers from the MBoard CD. Remove the device completely including physically; from Control Panel/System/Hardware/ Device Manager and the software itself beforehand. Good Luck.Patio, I thank you for the reply. I had a good idea that this was a fatal problem anyway. My best workaround has been to install Win2k to a new root folder. This is not a final solution obviously, but I now have access to the entire machine again. So now I can recover files and folders before nuking the C:\ and performing a true clean install... Ironically, the only reason I was hooking up the burner was to make an Ubuntu CD. I'm hoping Linux (once I learn the ins and outs) will not be as problematic as Windows.......sure. Yes, I've purchased a new DVD/CD burner. I'll see if it will install on the 'damaged' system before trying it elsewhere. Final comment. I have used these machines with this HP burner for 7 years. But this year, I used a different Win2k distro. It was said to be a 'better' distro - and it has performed better up to now. So, either that is not the case, or the Windows Update hotfixes are an issue here. Thanks again for the reply and I'm sure we will talk again... about my dual boot Linux/Win2k machine in a WEEK or so!! Good News... Just so you know if you visit Ubuntu's site they will ship up to 10 copies of the latest Distro for FREE. Nice to have for safekeeping in case you get in a jam. They include both a Live CD you can boot to and run and an install CD. Good Luck ! And Welcome to CH !Patio, As always, thanks for the helpful info! You had told me this in the past, and I WISH I'd taken your advice....I would have stayed out of this whole HP CD Writer mess! On the other hand, I now have a state-of-the-art DVD/CD burner that works fine (so far), and I stumbled upon a great work around for those times when my machine won't boot up! Blessings in disguise - always a nice surpriseAs always you're more than Welcome ! |
