Good lucki installed the software for the at&t internet CONNECTION. the majority of the installation was complete. connection had already been established, but towards the end when it was downloading some other software, like antiVirus and antiSpam, the computer froze. after that windows would not shutdown. Try an UNINSTALL and reinstall. thanks to everybody who helped me with this problem. i finally got it to shutdown properly. i went to the website Dusty had suggested and one of the solutions was to change the value of the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Shutdown, from "1" to "0". By doing this i disabled the fast shutdown option and the problem was solved. of course i tried a LOT of other solutions before finding the right one. once again, thank you for all your help. You're welcome and thanks for posting back.
